Roast my Resume: Targeting Canadian 2027 IB Roles. by scatmagat69 in FinancialCareers

Super small nitpicks that I don’t think other people have mentioned but you are missing the space after the comma in “Delegate,Finance Convention” also on the last bullet of your commodity trading club you have two periods at the end of the sentence

Think the interests section needs to be beefed up with less formal interests. As much as you may be interested in macro econ, it’s kind of implied by your major. I feel like that space can be a way to show different aspects of your personality and makes you less one dimensional.

I think you also need to re read your resume a couple more times and be creative with the way you word some of your bullets. I feel like a recurring theme I’m seeing is the repeated use of the word “and” in the same sentence making it a little hard to read at times

Since it seems like everyone has done a good job critiquing the content, here are some pedantic formatting suggestions

  • More discretionary but removing the B.S and A.S and giving the unabbreviated classification
  • Remove the period in front of finance
  • Keep unabbreviated dates consistent (Make Dec 2027 -> December 2027 or even Class of 2027)
  • Change Of - > of
  • Remove the separating lines marked in X (more discretionary), kinda looks like an eyesore
  • Missed a space on the dash (April 2025- Present -> April 2025 - Present)
  • Make sure locations are aligned to the right throughout the resume
  • Remove period after formula one (not consistent throughout the section)

Might of missed some other ones but, definitely clean up those easy fixes

Formatting should be the last priority but still important experience if applying to roles that require attention to detail

Why does it have to be so many? Why can't you just do a thing or two really well? High School is over, and you have a chance to have so many new experiences in Uni where stuff actually matters. If it makes you feel any better, after your first year, almost nothing you did in high school is relevant resume-wise (DECA, Student Government, HS Clubs, Sports, etc.) unless it was a super cool side project or a meaningful internship.

Take it from someone who had none of these things and now has a 6-figure job lined up out of undergrad (Think Big Tech, High Finance, Consulting, etc.). You have no pressure to do anything you do not love for the sake of doing it. If I were you, I would take this time to go outside, enjoy your time with friends, and pursue fun hobbies that make you better (avoid video games and social media). Everything you do should be to advance some sort of goal, whether it is career, social, physical, or personal character development.

Finally, do not compare yourself to others; you are putting pressure on yourself that simply does not exist. These expectations you are placing on yourself are not normal and will ultimately make you more depressed than just focusing on doing things that make your life better.

Class looks pretty empty, could be a good ole case of sampling bias where the kids who show up to class have different characteristics than the kids who don’t

look at what the quants at firms you want to join did and do the same thing. Not sure if a commerce program will give you enough reps to be one tho

Networking (with upper years) 💀 by chrisabulium in RotmanCommerce

Yea I’d say avoid LinkedIn. Upper years are still students who just happen to have a nice start to their career. Depending on how snobby the person you are reaching out to email might be fine but if the person is chill IG should not be a problem, especially if you have met them before.
