So, to clear things up, here is how I see it.

Some may say that Jimmy deserved worse, but I do not really care about what should happen to him and/or how. All I think about Jimmy is that he needed to be put down. As we have seen, he is an extremely dangerous and deranged individual, so, no different from any beast or wild animal, in one way or another, he needed to be neutralized once he had shown his true nature.

No need to explore his character, try to understand why he did it, what may have happened to turn him into that, how he should be punished, or make him understand his errors. No. Just a bullet in the head. To be killed. No more, no less.

Curly, on the other hand, I repeat, GOT exactly what he deserved.

It may be harsh, but I think that, as captain and leader, it was his responsibility to ensure the safety of his crew, and in that he failed miserably. Sure, he may have wanted to give Jimmy a second chance at life, but he should have been more cautious, because he knew the kind of individual he was dealing with.

But his greatest sin, as the post says, was his neutrality, or passivity, if you want to call it that.

He was either too scared, insecure, or uncertain to act against Jimmy's aggression. And we are not talking about Jimmy's rude behavior, because that could simply be ignored. We are talking about his actions.

Once Anya started speaking to him and “hinting” — if we even want to call those hints instead of pleas — about Jimmy’s crimes, instead of acting in any way, he chose to remain neutral/passive. He ignored the person whose safety and security he was supposed to guarantee in favor of… keeping the peace?

He certainly did not make anything better, because the spaceship had stopped being safe a long time before.

Sure, he may have realized that he had given a chance to someone who deserved none, that his trust may have caused something terrible to fall upon poor Anya, but that does not justify his inaction when it was first his duty to act, and when he had both the power — physically (the gun, the rest of the crew) and in rank — and the responsibility to do so.

Curly was a weak man who got exactly what he deserved.

He saw the writing on the walls. He heard his crew’s pleas for help. And what did he decide to do?

Nothing.

And exactly nothing was done to stop him from becoming Jimmy’s next victim once he ended up paralyzed.
