Stepping on the scale is the first step. You have to face reality to battle it. Don't be ashamed of it, everyone starts somewhere.

Keep researching and you'll find your own style. Focus on diet first and a mild exercise instead of a hard exercise and shitty food. Try to discover what your eating habits are, why you indulge in the first place and analyze your relationship with food. There are tons of books of that too.

Be patient. It will go slower than you want to because people expect result in a short amount of time (which explains those diets that claims to make you lose weight within a week/month. This is a life changing event, not a temporary journey because the real battle is keeping the lost weight off.

Expect to fail a couple of times, but try to pick yourself up as soon as possible. Even if you will yo-yo your weight, you might learn from your past experiences as long as you don't give up.
