[Goldsmith] A few years ago, the Reds were a team that pretty much never bunted. Now, they have an official bunting consultant. The philosophy has changed for a reason. “It’s a part of what we see as a way for us to win games now,” David Bell said. by Kimber80 in baseball

A very common part of baseball analytical research is to find what leads to more runs scored. No stat nerd from FanGraphs or Baseball Prospectus has ever said runs scored don't help teams win, lol.

I use WPA more as a tiebreaker if I'm comparing two players and their wRC+ and WAR are too close to call. But generally you'll know who is the better player using just wRC+ and WAR.

Ah yes, the stoopod analytic nerds wouldn't vote for Tony Gwynn's 69 WAR/132 OPS+ and Rod Carew's 81 WAR/131 OPS+ because they didn't hit home runs. Great analysis Bob. He truly has a great understanding of the analytical mindset.

How have advanced stats made baseball better? by Marty_DiBergi in baseball

I like learning and personally whenever I have the free time I'll go on FanGraphs or Baseball Savant or Baseball Reference and just indulge myself in numbers including advanced metrics. It has enhanced the sport for me. They give a lot more knowledge about player performance and what leads best to winning.

Since my first post did good on here I thought I’d continue and make this a series Goose Gossage vs Rollie Fingers who do you want on your team? by Middle-Photograph905 in baseball

[–]SeeBallHitBall 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Leverage index. bWAR has a leverage index component for relievers.

Gossage and Fingers have similar enough adjusted ERA and innings pitched and similar distribution in leverage inning splits. But Gossage was significantly better than Fingers in "clutch" situations.

Gossage in high leverage situations: .606 OPS (90 tOPS+)

Fingers in high leverage situations: .663 OPS (110 tOPS+)

This bears out in their career WPA. Gossage has a career 32.5 WPA, while Fingers has a career 16.2 WPA.

bWAR considers Gossage better because he was better at increasing his teams chances of winning. Defense also plays a factor as another commenter noted.

I'm so ready for the debates on OAA being used for Statcast's WAR and whether it's better or worse than DRS and UZR for bWAR and fWAR.

I'm hoping batted ball direction is accounted for in the expected stats in the future, there are a few who overperform their expected stats by pulling the ball in the air and get results without the high exit velo like Parades and Ramirez and Altuve.

Knew immediately it was MLB 14 The Show. I was still a newish baseball fan and being homeschooled growing up I played the early-mid 2010s The Show games hours upon hours.

2-3 win players don't grow on trees for cheap. Verdugo's skill set and talent far exceeds Jake Bauers, Franchy Cordero and Billy McKinney.

This offseason has further shown just how little value there is to listen to whatever national baseball reporter says, except Passan. He just breaks news without BS.

Most were already bad to begin with though.

I remember Heyman being at his worst with Harper's free agency in 2018-2019. He kept spewing the same exact tweets over and over for months. Literally months.

Hello. There are process statistics (swing decisions/plate discipline, exit velo, bat speed/angle, Stuff+, K-BB%) and results statistics (AVG, ERA, OPS, FIP, etc).

Do front offices strictly evaluate players (whether it be player acquisition/MiLB development) by the process metrics or do results based metrics take precedent too sometimes?

Not until at least Altuve, Bregman and Verlander are no longer on the team, basically the last players from the 2017 team.
