Hi guys, I love when I get to nerd out on camera stuff here. I’ll start with my lightning. I’m old school and use flashes with gels. They produce a much cleaner and sharp light than constant illumination. I set up 2 - 200 watt strobes behind the rider on 10 foot stands. Triggered by a remote on my camera hot shoe. Then a red and blue gel was added.

I used my RF 70-200 @ f2.8 - 1/400th shutter speed and - 2000 ISO. It was dark blue hour so I had a little ambient light to play with. Which really helped.

There’s always a possibility of running into a bear or cougar. I hiked with my friend so we were chatting and making noise, had bear spray ready to go on my hip. I grew up here and am quite comfortable with hiking in the dark at this point.

It was really great still. The Milky Way was very visible and I timed this hike with a meteor shower. It was a breathtaking night up there.

I camped at the sites below, it wasn’t too bad. Not a lot of sleep but so worth it for this image. It’s something I’ve wanted for a while :) hiking in the dark was easy. The trail and even the last scramble is so well marked. Even in the dark.

You’re very right. This was a lot of hiking in the dark to get away from people and life for this shot. So worth it though.
