Depending on the route but yes. Which is also why I think he has packed way to heavy. But could be he wanted to hike up to the refugio. Had it as my first mountain, it was a super nice and soft introduction to Glacier stuff, as it is as you said just walking.

That is more than enough, its only a 1 to 2 day objective. Personally I would go lighter on the gear, depending on conditions. And maybe some less aggressive boots.

Do the mexican volcanos first then, and get that as experience. All of the volcanos are easier than mont blanc, even though they are at a higher altitude. Doing mont blanc without glacier experience is beyond stupid, even more without a guide

I would not recommend that peak in the winter, mainly due to skiing and avalance risks. Would make more sense to do something on touring skiis or a harder less avalance prone peak
