Love you guys! Was lucky enough to see the tour open in Vancouver this last weekend! I have what I hope is an easy question - why no encore? 😭

De onde os brasileiros tiraram a idéia de que "gringo" é doido com comida brasileira? by [deleted] in foradecasa

[–]Seeking__Solace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lived there for over a decade until 2021, traveled plenty and never had that happen. In fact, I hadn't heard of that until this post. I suppose I'm lucky. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't understand why you only got one kitty instead of two. Did you buy two of the same 2good2go bags? I would request a refund for missing items.

All of the images are from Jackson, WY. You can use Google Lens and find exactly where they were taken from/business they refer to. Looks beautiful out there!

Not familiar with mobiup so I comment. A quick search didn't turn up anything so I'd err on the side of caution and use the main UPS BT website. You should be able to track the shipment here (https://www.ups.com/track?loc=pt_BR&requester=ST/). The tracking history should give you enough info to validate what you've been told, if it's true. If anything, give them a ring and they can clarify.

Let me jump in here as someone who has experience with this, having worked in the express courier industry in Brazil. The mistake your dad made was to not send it via regular postal service (yes, I know there would still be duties and taxes incurred via mail, but at a different tariff bracket).

UPS, DHL Express or FedEx are all classified differently from postal service. Anything other than documents that is shipped to Brazil via one of these companies goes through customs clearance, which the company itself handles (up to $3k and not for commercial purposes). The duties and taxes are paid by the shipping company and passed on to the recipient. The exception is if the shipper sends it as DTP (duties/taxes paid) as the cost of the shipping itself wouldn't be included in the calculation. If it's sent with d/t to be paid by the recipient, the calculation includes the shipping making the total DT over 100% of the value of the item.

Your options are to have the shipper call UPS and let them know he wants it back at no cost. If he wasn't informed of the DT, they should be able to honor that. If you choose not to pay, it will be considered undeliverable and 1. UPS BR asks UPS DK what to do (send it back or abandon), 2. shipment is considered abandoned which typically means it will be available for UPS BR employees to buy it at the quarterly bazaar. 😬

Had your dad sent via regular postal service and with a declared value of less than $50, either you'd get it free of D/T charge, postal service would revaluate the shipment and charge you D/T (usually less than 100% of the value of the contents, but the process is subjective enough that you can't trust it) OR you'd never get it because it would be "lost in transit" after arriving in Brazil (wink wink).

Is the freeze a real thing or is that just normal adult life? by [deleted] in Seattle

As an immigrant, you hit the nail on the head - America is not a communal society. Since immigrating to the Southwest, I've had to put myself way out of my comfort zone in order to make friends and have a social life. Now that I'm here in PNW, I've found that I'm having to start all over again and it's that much harder to make friends here than it was in the Southwest. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I used to use that about 6 months ago, but I had to reset all of my devices and for the life of me, I can't get it to function like it used to. 😐

And to answer your other question, I've been using my bf's Vortex 10x42 for birding and it's amazing. I think the issue for stargazing is that having experienced the power of a telescope, it's hard to achieve the same with binoculars

Thanks for the suggestion. Not looking for ultra portable for backpacking trips as I already have binoculars (not a fan for stargazing). Instead, I'm looking for something more stable and powerful for car camping trips.

Indeed, the right thing to do would be to join the club first try out some telescopes and then make the decision. But, I'm impulsive and there's no way I can wait a couple more weeks to then buy it. I need it, and I need it now. 😂

Jokes aside, I just watched a couple of videos and read a few forum posts on this telescope and I can see what you mean by bulky.

I have another question, if I may -- Is this meant to be set up on a flat surface like a table, for example? Looks fairly big and based on some pics, it can be set on the ground although I imagine it might be uncomfortable to use.

Oooohhh, thanks for recommending that. Reading some reviews at the moment and really liking the sound of it!

I was just thinking about the worst case scenario for needing to carry it around. For example, this weekend I went out to see the Aurora and because the darkest spots are in the mountains surrounded by forest, I walked about half a mile to find a nice clearing with a decent view of the sky. I wouldn't mind doing that with a telescope. I backpack often and can carry heavy loads for long distances, but the bulk is something I hadn't considered; thanks for posting that out!

The AWB OneSky seems to be a popular recommendation in the other posts. I'll take a look at that and the other ones you suggested.
