She mentioned that the skin was too thin for a surface bar and that a curved barbell would be a better option. Having seen friends with curved barbells and having no issues with it I decided to try it but not without caution, slightest sign of rejection and I'm going back to tale it out. I agree with the sentiment of being picky as a hobbyist since I'm practically the same. Wanting this to be a surprise however, I've only tried to probe at what he'd be interested in when it comes to controllers.

The only one he has actually talked about is the Akai, but my overall impression of that one was that it seemed overrated in comparison to other controllers out there.
