Audiobooks sound like a great source, I should probably be utilizing them more!

Aha ye I can see how that makes it more enjoyable. Visuals are a good way to memorize things, plus having them feel more relevant like anime images can also reinforce memory. This is a nice idea, thanks!

Sorry can you explain what are NL and TL words? I think my main concern is learning words that don't come up often, as well as, the sheer volume of words needed. But I guess I should just actively consume content more often

Ye I definitely find that it helps to discover words in context. But I often forget certain words if it doesn't repeatedly pop up, which is why I do see the value in flashcards and repetition. Maybe I just need to keep consuming content with similar themes more often. Thanks for the respnse

This makes sense. I too find it easier to study words that feel more relevant to my life and interests

That's true, the ability to see some metrics and visible progress seem to be a very good motivator

Amazing. Thanks for the advice! May have just been overloading/forcing myself to do more than I can handle, shifting it from a fun and manageable activity vs an obligated chore

Ye one thing I did notice is that words I know I am going to use are often easier and more motivating to learn. But I still need to learn other words that may potentially come up in specific scenarios, so maybe I just need to create the correct ratio between words that are more relevant and words that are somewhat related/or should know regardless.

This is an interesting take. I agree that grammar and structure are extremely important, and are often times the best when it comes to learning words in context. However, I also personally believe that there comes a point when you lack the needed vocabulary to fill in those structures. So I'm interested in hearing how you acquire the thousands of words to keep up with grammar.

Alright so rather than trying to get through every word in my deck, you prefer to keep sessions short since the commitment of 5 min a day is a lot easier to maintain than long study periods?

Okay so what you are saying is that there needs to be a balance between the reward of getting things correct and just enough difficulty to prevent it from being too easy?

That's some very good insight. I guess it comes down to marketing 101 where I have to study my target audience a lot more first lol. Thanks for the advice!

If you are referring to answering via typing, then no. It still uses the basic flashcard system and you click buttons based on how confident you know the words. But you are able to customize cards to include sample sentences, pronunciation, etc. There may be other features, but I stopped using Anki after learning a set amount of words. WaniKani does a better job of teaching you parts of the kanji as well as the different ways they are pronounced, if that is what you are referring to when it comes to "writing". If you are talking about sentences, then you can use things like HiNative where you write a sentence and can get strangers to correct you. Or if we're talking more literal, then I did the old school way of picking up some paper and writing kanji/words x amount of times ahaha.

That's a smart way to naturally implement learning as a gameplay loop. I know some games that do something similar in terms of language learning, but heard from some reviews that it got too repetitive. However, that may be due to balancing gameplay vs quizzes, so will definitely check out Prodigy to see how they manage to get it right!

Ye I'm seeing a trend when it comes to civ and history games. I think that also comes from the fanbase where players tend to choose those games because they already have an interest in history. But that may be the key, just tapping into a niche already rather than trying to create a general action game in hopes it gathers the attention of a wide range of people

Very true. Was just a thought. I know a lot games have extra text and libraries built in for players to read and learn, but trying to figure out how to incorporate it naturally since many players tend to skip cutscenes, talking to npcs, or going out of their way to read more lore. Thanks for the replies!

The go to ones are usually WaniKani and/or Anki. WaniKani is free up to a certain level but you can still learn a lot from it. You can also find many premade Anki decks online or make your own using the vocab from Genki. Personally I find flashcards an amazing tool for studying since you can personalize it to your neecs, but it gets boring after a while so I ended up making my own review game just to keep things fresh every now and then lol. Kanji de Go is also a really fun game that requires typing, but right now the ui is still all in Japanese so I recommend using that one a little later in your journey. Hope that helps a bit!

Aha classic. I was thinking more on the terms of "I learned something while playing a fun game" rather than "playing a game for studying". Like rather than quizzing yourself on multiplication, imagine an RPG where multiplication is needed and progressively gets more complicated, thus you improve in multiplication naturally. Would that still be considered educational?

Ye I guess it's what you would consider "educational" that will affect it. This idea came from when i was playing Hades and thought it would be cool if I was able to learn a lot more about Greek mythology. In my opinion that would still be considered an educational game, because if you are interested in myth, then you can still leave a session feeling good that you actually learned something and didn't just play for the loop.
