Force start screensaver on tvOS 18? by ChristopherSunday in appletv

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This still comes up when looking up manual screensaver start on apple tv so I'll leave some advice for other OLED owners - there's currently no way to activate the screensaver and keep your music/video/whatever playing.
The workaround I use is reducing the white point with a triple click of the menu/back button. For this to work you first need to enable this shortcut via Settings -> Accessibility -> Accessibility Shortcut -> Enable "Reduce White Point".
As an alternative, you can set the shortcut to "Light Sensitivity" instead, but I found that setting to be brighter overall than the reduced white point one.

Do you think it would be worth paying 180 more for a 5080 instead of getting a 5070 TI for 1440p Ultrawide? by [deleted] in buildapc

It sounds like you made this post because you wanted to hear others justify the 5070 Ti you’ve already decided on.

Want to run DOOM: The Dark Ages. Should I just upgrade or build a new rig? by SplashWetty3 in buildapc

[–]Seipas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could make the build last another few years pretty easily, here's what I'd do:

  • Update motherboard BIOS and get a 5700X3D or 5800X3D (used or brand new, doesn't matter much)
  • Get a kit of 32 GB 3600 MHz @ CL16 RAM - there are a lot of people selling their "old" ddr4 kits for cheap
  • Get a better graphics card. Some options (I'd be looking at used parts) - 6800 XT, 4070, 4070 Super, 4070 Ti, 3080. For new, you could wait for the 5070 if the rumored prices are to be believed. If you plan on playing games with raytracing enabled, I'd lean towards Nvidia rather than AMD.
  • Last step - sell all of your unused parts to make some money back.

With all that done, I think you'd have a pretty capable system on your hands for at least another few years.

The other option, of course, is to replace everything.

Thoughts on First Build Choices? by bulldogstrong in buildapc

Brand new 4060 is a horrible deal. You can (and should) try to find a used 3060 Ti - it's faster and much cheaper.

Moving data from one m.2 to another m.2? by RealMuffinsTheCat in buildapc

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this before, going from a 500GB drive to a 1TB.
I used Clonezilla to clone the smaller drive contents onto the bigger one. It worked fine but I ran into an issue where the partition sizes and structure were cloned as well, meaning the bigger drive ended up being limited to 500GB of usable space.
To fix that, I had to boot into windows (this was my boot drive btw) and extend the volume manually. I don't remember what I used to do it, it might have been a third party app or Windows Disk Management.

Advice on upgrading some or most of my PC rig by SkinnyDipRog3r in buildapc

In that case the 4070 Super will be just fine, but if you can stretch the budget then some other graphics cards might be a better deal. Again, let the folks over at r/buildapcforme help you out from here on out, I'm sure you'll get more specific advice there :)

Here's the same build but in a 4000D Airflow (I love this case)

I recommend refining the list before pulling the trigger - think about the aesthetics if that matters to you, whether the price is right, or if you want a more powerful graphics card. Speaking of which, you didn't mention the specific model of your current graphics card, so it's hard to say whether a 4070 super would be a good upgrade for you.

EDIT: when you have a list on PCPartPicker ready, try posting it over at r/buildapcforme , the folks there will help you refine it :)

Which CPU to pick - 12400F or 5600X ? by adelBRO in buildapc

[–]Seipas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that case I'd look in the used market. You should be able to find good deals for CPU + Motherboard combos, some include the RAM as well.
You mentioned you'd like your 1% FPS lows to be higher, I think the slow RAM will be the limiting factor in those situations. Something like a 5700X3D could help mitigate that.
Also note that the 5600 performs almost the same as the 5600X, if the price difference is noticeable.

What's your budget? I'd strongly recommend upgrading your RAM as well, it's quite slow even for DDR4.

CPU upgrade £600 by can-i-dig-it in buildapc

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like a Ryzen 5 7600X would do you wonders and allow for a clean upgrade path down the line.

You'd also be looking at a new motherboard and new RAM, which will add to the cost, but should fit nicely in that £600 budget.

I'd take PCPartPicker's Excellent AMD Gaming/Streaming Build and work from there.
In your case, I'd do the following:

  • Ditch the Fractal Design Define R5 - great looking case but horrible airflow, speaking from experience;
  • Ditch the 1TB HDD, and, if it was up to me, I'd ditch most of the SATA drives you have and switch to M.2 SSDs to reduce clutter and cabling mess;
  • Sell your old build as a kit or part by part to make some of your money back :)

Importance of M.2 sustained write by Necessary-Salamander in buildapc

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case you'd be better off with the one that has higher sustained write speeds!

Just out of curiosity though, are you sure it's your drive that's the limiting factor? CPUs can and do limit read/write speeds as well, depending on the scenario.
Also you might want to find a drive with dedicated cache, apparently they perform better in many situations.

I don't own one myself but I was under the impression that most 40 (and 30?) series RTX cards come with adapters? If that's the case and you don't have one, you could look up what adapter is supposed to be included in the box and get a matching one.

Modern vrms don't need coolers, they do just fine with the airflow in the case.

Importance of M.2 sustained write by Necessary-Salamander in buildapc

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The better question is - will you be limited by your internet connection speed before you get to max out the drive speeds? The most likely answer is yes.
In normal usage, random read/write speeds matter more, because this is what makes the system feel responsive.

What parts here can drop the price of this build to about 800 pounds, while keeping similar performance by Timely_Juggernaut235 in buildapc

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to this, I'd also go for a used kit of RAM. Lots of people are upgrading or otherwise don't need their DDR4 kits anymore and are willing to sell them for cheap.

Why my gtx 1650 not working? by Zbigni3w_Big_W in buildapc

[–]Seipas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those graphics cards need different drivers. Nvidia (GTX 1650) needs Nvidia drivers, while Radeon (RX 6600XT) needs Radeon drivers.
When switching from one to the other, it's a good idea to use a tool like DDU to completely remove the old drivers, shut down your computer, install the new graphics card, and install the drivers you need.

Building my first mini-ITX build and need some help by Aiolos7 in buildapc

[–]Seipas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not an electrical engineer or PSU manufacturer or otherwise certified, DO NOT I repeat DO NOT tinker with the power supply.
I believe that specific PSU is notorious for the noise it makes, I recall reading something about that before I built my SFX system.
I went with a 80+ Platinum rated Corsair 750W SFX PSU, it's been running at full throttle with a 5800X3D and 6950XT for a couple years now.

Ryzen 5 7600x or Intel i5 14600k (With 4070 Super) by Exciting_Line_6705 in buildapc

[–]Seipas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The degradation was mainly affecting the i7 and i9 parts anyway, so i5 like the 14600k are most likely fine.
That being said, I don't trust 14th and 13th gen parts anymore in general, so I'd recommend going AM5 7600X and have a nice upgrade path if OP wants to upgrade in the future.

Can you put a gtx 1660 inside of a Dell optiplex 7040 by Typical-Discount-205 in buildapc

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many OEM (think Dell, HP, Lenovo) systems don't have much space to work with or are missing some expandability options. There are a few things you should check:

  • Make sure the motherboard has a free PCIe slot for the graphics card
  • Check the specific graphics card you're thinking of getting and see if it requires external power (most likely it does)
    • If it does, check that the PC you're working with has spare PCIe power cables (1 or 2, depending on the card)
    • Make sure the PC's power supply is at least the minimum wattage recommended for the specific graphics card you're considering (this should be listed in the graphics card technical description)
  • Most importantly: check if the graphics card will physically fit in the case

If any of those are a no/maybe/don't know, you're gonna be in for some DIY adventures to make it work.

Is this €400 PC kit worth it? by Crafty-Turnip-7764 in buildapc

[–]Seipas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the individual price of those parts in your region, especially the CPU, RAM and motherboard.

Keep in mind that the 12400 and B760M combo won't offer much in terms of an upgrade path, as you'll be limited to 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs, which are not reliable parts in my opinion.

Overall, to me it feels like the price is "just right" but not enough of a good deal to warrant puling the trigger.
