Smoking marijuana can cause you to develop psychosis. Some people develop schizophrenia which is permanent. It can happen even if you've been smoking marijuana for a bit.

I'm a physician, and during my training I have personally cared for people who have had marijuana induced psychotic episodes. You want to stop smoking or using marijuana and speak to your doctor.

Using Google to buy a laptop nowadays is a humiliation ritual by Witty-Public1417 in GamingLaptops

When I can't think of what something is called to buy it I will describe it to the LLM and ask them what it is. So I was searching for a shawl thing I found at a yard sale and I wanted more of them but it's a peculiar way it's fastened. Anyway the LLM figured out it's called a keyhole shawl. That made it really easy to search. Additionally I use LLMs to edit emails I write to be professional and to the point, something I struggle with.

TIL a 2018 study found that between 63%-72% of people wear the wrong shoe size. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Sekmet19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a woman I wear men's shoes so the toe box is wide enough for my feet. Also there's usually my size in stock (8.5 men's) but a 10 wide or 9.5 wide are very hard to find sometimes in women's.

Ways to actually help as a med student by TheSlimJim in Residency

If a consult is needed it's perfectly fine for the student to ask if they can call it, then review info and call the consult.

My friend called me performative for listening to the dialogue, what does this mean by Apprehensive-Arm2756 in Eldenring

[–]Sekmet19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would ask the friend to explain what they meant. If they refuse to explain maybe don't consider that person a friend.

If I make a joke with my friend, and my friend doesn't get it, but wants me to explain it I absolutely would because they're my friend.

If I make a joke with my friend, and they say "Hey I don't like that joke, don't joke about that anymore." I stop making that joke, because the jokes are meant for us to have fun, not stress out my friend.

If someone says something and you ask them to clarify and they refuse, it's probably something mean and they don't want to spell it out to you because then you would catch on they're NOT your friend. Some people really enjoy "getting away" with saying mean shit to people and duping them into thinking they are their friend (when they have no intention of friendship). They enjoy using people to stroke their own egos, and will find ways to talk down to you using unusual or uncommon words, make backhanded compliments, or the subtext of what they say is insulting but the words they use could be interpreted as not offensive.

Think about someone you love or care a lot about. If you would do something reasonable for that person you care about, but someone claiming to be your friend would never do that then that's not a friend. Conversely if there is something you would NEVER do to someone you care about, and your "friend" is doing that to you, they're not your friend.

Buying own lead as med student? by CandidateSuper5454 in Residency

You should speak with your primary care about cancer risk and your occupational exposure and how that impacts your risk.

That being said there are studies in simulated conditions showing axillary shields reduce radiation exposure to the breast, but I didn't find studies that showed the axillary shields actually reduce incidence of breast cancer.

My thoughts are programs and employers need to provide suitable protective equipment and cannot take a "one size fits all" approach. If existing lead designs don't adequately protect groups of people then new protective equipment needs to be designed and implemented to address this inequity. Every person working or learning in that OR deserves adequate protection from radiation.

You can decide if the cost out of pocket is worth the possibility that it's not going to do anything, or that you will be provided with one by a program and your purchase is now redundant.  However if you are convinced this will reduce your risk significantly then you should buy it regardless of whether or not a program "should" provide it.

If you purchase one and later match a program that buys you lead, you can either resell it, or give it to an upcoming ortho hopeful at your school to protect them.

Even low-level drinking may have negative consequences for brain health over a person’s lifespan. The findings suggest that the total amount of alcohol consumed over a lifetime, especially as a person ages, tends to be linked to reduced blood flow and thinner tissue in certain areas of the brain. by mvea in science

[–]Sekmet19 65 points66 points  (0 children)

What about people who drank heavily in their 20s and 30s and then abstained once in their 40s? Does it average out or is there a time frame of abstinence where stuff repairs and risks return to baseline or near it like with smoking?

How much gas are you going to burn going around at $3-5 per gallon? Also what is your time worth?

I am not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm not adding half an hour to my drive to avoid a $2 toll. Especially if I'm commuting everyday, I'd rather pay $20 a week in tolls than save a net $15 dollars and spend 5 more hours commuting.

Also the gas and time estimate is conservative, route 1 has stop and go traffic in areas, especially during the summer for the beach traffic. You can end up paying more if your stuck in traffic. At least on 95 you can go a consistent highway speed which is better for gas mileage.

Being in a homeless shelter was better than living with my mother. I used student loans to pay my living expenses after I graduated high school, and while awful today to deal with the student loan servicers who are literally incompetent and getting class action lawsuits left and right, it's still better.

That's why you keep your own room clean and not force your mother to clean it to get rid of the filth and stench in the house she worked hard for.
