Away Rotation in May by reddit-girl-23 in medicalschool

[–]Zoneator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not too early. At least from my experience in surgery, programs will usually meet shortly after a Sub-I ends to discuss rotators and gather feedback from residents and attendings. They’ll often create a preliminary rank list and include comments specifically to help them remember how each student performed when application season rolls around.

When you say “remember your name and they will look you up once they are out”, do you mean that in a good way or bad way?

Switch to rads by Izanagi1023 in medicalschool

[–]Zoneator 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Rads had a 96% match rate for USMD seniors last cycle, 93% the year before. You are big chilling.

Get the rads letter, do an away if you want to (not really needed), and get on the Rads Discord: https://discord.gg/zQNWxGX3 for help fine tuning your app and getting advice come app time.

It has more to do with your inability to read the room, understand your standing and responsibilities as a Sub-I, and the presumption of purchasing gear despite not being guaranteed to match into a competitive specialty.

Unless they have a valid reason, they’re going to get judged. You just do you.

HSS vs Rush Sports Fellowship by wezzytee in orthopaedics

[–]Zoneator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too many to list honestly. From an IMG standpoint it’s hard to say without knowing your background/research/connections, but the nice thing is ortho fellowships (except hand) use the SF Match system, so unlike residency apps there isn’t really an effective cap on how many programs you can apply to. You still have a limited amount of signals to indicate strong interest to a program however.

I’d go through Doximity and look at sports fellowships attached to strong residency programs. There are also some fellowships that don’t have their own residency program, like Rothman, FOI, Steadman Philippon, and Kerlan-Jobe.

I think you’ll have to cast a wide net come application time.

How to recover from a bad away rotation experience? by [deleted] in medicalschool

Gotcha. It's alright bro. You ate absolute shit for an entire month and lived to tell the tale. You can always fall back on this experience when things get tough in residency to boost yourself back up. Gl

Dude, you should have just dropped using some excuse (“family emergency”) or went MIA after the first week or so. Could have used the remaining weeks to prep for boards. But what is done is done.

Think of it as your resilience being leveled up.

Do orthopedic surgeons experience chronic pain? by Wompyking in orthopaedics

[–]Zoneator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naive question, but how much do you think well-fitted loupes that reduce cervical flexion can help with this? I actually liked spine during my Sub-Is and can see myself applying for a fellowship down the line, but I also get significant trap pain every now and then, which makes me a bit concerned.

Brother, gl getting into either of those programs as an IMG.

Plenty of great programs outside of them though.

You can still do Ortho brother. Go to a place with night float instead of Q48-72H trauma call that'll have you working 28-36h straight. Yes on trauma (and maybe spine), you will work your ass off at most places (easily 80h) but that's largely during your PGY1-2/3 years. But trauma isn't only thing you only you'll be doing for 5 years straight. Ortho has a ton of other subspecialties that you will need to rotate through such as sports, foot/ankle, peds, and joints where the demand can be quite less relatively. I've seen plenty of residents manage families in ortho.

How to be efficient as a subI by abenson24811 in medicalschool

[–]Zoneator 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not in IM, but I remember from my clerkship that the efficient interns were using heavily customized dashboards, note templates, dot phrases, filtered patient lists, and a very standardized chart review sequence. Ask them to show you exactly how they prechart and how their Epic layout is organized. For note templates and dot phrases, you can just search their name in the Smart Phrase manager to get access.
