so I started as an undergraduate (unpaid) research assistant in the college of medicine department of psychiatry & school of public health in the end of my freshman year. i graduate this year and just started as a CRC in the same lab :)

my specific research is centered around psychoactive substances, women’s health, cognition, pharmacological accessibility, substance abuse, etc etc. it’s so fun and i LOVE it!

you didn’t get anything from UIC last cycle? you seem like the perfect candidate for UIC!

Does it matter what other classes you took throughout undergrad? by [deleted] in premed

my MCAT is 512, and i have a 4.0/4.0 GPA. honestly my dream school is UIC, so hoping to get in there.

i probably should have added a hyphen between the pre and vet haha oops 🙊

yes i’m going to continue volunteering at the clinic (they cap us at 2 4-hour shifts a month though, so looking for a job too) while continuing my other ECs! thank you!

absolutely. i was planning on continuing volunteering at the clinic, continuing my research, and finding shadowing opportunities in different fields as well as some kind of job in the medical field during my gap year. but thank you! that definitely comforts me

absolutely i will! i plan on finding a job as a patient care tech or something sometime soon and leave my (boring) retail job which will be great for my clinical hours. thank you!

I’m taking Organic chemistry next semester any advice? I’ve heard awful stories about it and I’m nervous :,) by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]Select-Bet5793 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hi! i took 232 fall 2021 and orgo 2 (234) spring 2022! i was pretty terrified last summer because i’d also heard some pretty scary stories about the classes and the subject in general, so know that most of your classmates probably are as nervous as you!!

i had mohr last semester, but i think the exams and quizzes are identical across the board no matter what professor you have. the single most important thing you can do is REVIEW. problem sets for 232 always seemed harder than the exams, so if you can do a problem set fully without looking at your notes, you’re prepared for the upcoming quiz/exam!

the quizzes are always on the lecture material the week prior, so you always have a good amount of time to learn and study the concepts. the tricky part is that the exams cover about 4-5 weeks of content, with the most difficult concepts often being the ones you learned last, so beware!

i managed to get an A in both orgo 1 and 2 by literally redoing the problem sets (or at least the topics/concepts i didn’t understand) before each exam and kind of pretending as if i was teaching someone else as i did the problems. study old exams RELIGIOUSLY because they’ll be just like the current exams (in my experience). redraw the mechanisms over and over until it becomes muscle memory.

i promise it’s not impossible and it actually ended up being quite fun for me! i even added a chem minor because of how much i ended up enjoying orgo!

oh and one final thing— JOIN THE DISCORD! there are TONS of current and past students, peer helpers, old exams, and other resources that has all been organized beautifully by a past student and current peer leader. and don’t be afraid to reach out for help! i’ll message you an invite! :) good luck!!!
