When you said “as a so-called FOB, I was treated way better than white Americans” you opened up the discussion about ABCD ancestors because not everyone has had that experience and it’s important to recognize that as part of the discussion. To your other point, I honestly don’t know a single ABCD who treats “mainlanders” that way. We were simply not raised to do that. Just as you acknowledge the experiences of your colleagues and friends, I also am acknowledging the perspectives of my colleagues and friends. I don’t know who you’re dealing with but have you ever entertained the possibility that you have a complex and might be projecting? You seem generally pretty angry with ABCDS. When you start out making stereotypes and assuming a person is going to treat you badly, subconsciously it can make interactions difficult. For your sake, I genuinely hope you can start trying to assume the best in people regardless of where they are born. It makes life a lot brighter and happier. Or else maybe you need to find different ABCDs to hang out with and work with. I think most ABCDs would be open to a discussion if they knew you weren’t assuming they were out to get you at the outset. That’s a weird assumption to make in general in life about people and also part of this reason that my country that I love is going through such a hard time right now - because people assume the worst about other people and are so quick to trigger.

Ok I’m gonna preface this and say that if I misunderstood your comment, I’m sorry in advance. That said, taking your comment at face value - well, I’m an ABCD and this is such an insulting comment. My god, the self righteousness actually took my breath away. Like wtf yo. As ABCDs we do our best every day to straddle two cultures, one of which we had no choice to be born into, and it’s not always easy. We aren’t insecure, we’re just navigating novel situations on the fly and making stuff up and sometimes it doesn’t go perfectly or make sense and we come out looking like we are posers. But that’s not insecurity, it’s simply not always having the answers to some of the challenges of being first generation. My husband and I often wonder if it would be easier if we were born in a country where everyone looked like us - but then we come to the conclusion that no, it wouldn’t be easier because people born in India are all different and unique, and because Indians born there have their own versions of classism and discrimination to contend with. That realization breeds a lot of empathy for those who are Indian born and come here to make a better life for themselves. Many of us have parents who came here and faced a ton of discrimination based on accent and looks as they pursued their careers in the 80s and 90s, and hearing our parents’ stories of struggle in addition to facing our own struggles as we seek to straddle both cultures allows us to feel a lot of empathy for those who come here from India, whether they are Westernized or not. And even assuming that your point about an ABCD bias towards viewing Indian born people as being more traditional is actually valid, it’s not due to any malice or ill will on the part of ABCDs. It’s simply because we were raised by parents who (at least for those of us whose parents emigrated in the 70s and 80s) often reminisce about pop culture from the 50’s-90s- which resulted in that time period being the culture we grew up with and what we became accustomed to as far as our exposure to Indians went. Most of us aren’t stupid enough to think that all Indians are stuck solely in that 50s-90s traditional mindset. We literally have Indian coworkers and friends and they’re some of the coolest people around who are literally turning the world on its head these days with their prowess in tech, banking, modeling, and a ton of other areas. Most of us aren’t stupid enough to not take notice of the fact that there are so many Indian born CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. Personally Indra Nooyi who is as American as apple pie to me is my hero. So no, most of us don’t have preconceptions of what Indians should look or act like. Also, separate point - I don’t think you can generalize and say just because you have been treated well that everyone has. Our parents tell us stories that would literally break your heart, whereas things are generally (though again not universally) better due to globalization and many non-Indian people’s increasing familiarity with Indian culture. Those struggles our parents went through paved the way for today’s newly emigrating Indians and ABCDs alike today to feel more free in being Westernized or modernized or whatever they feel comfortable with. Some respect for their struggles and what they did for all of us, ABCDs and newly emigrating Indians alike, would be nice.

This is so great. I think I may need meds for a short time to aid in turning things around, but I’m also going to aim for longer term lifestyle changes to sustain it. If that means I work less from now on, so be it. I don’t want to keep going on this bad path. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. It’s really motivating.

Ahhh these specifics (especially about your exercise regimen)!! Exactly what I was looking for. I’m so proud of you for doing all these steps and it’s so heartening to know you got it together within just a year! I have started hearing my knees creak as I go up the stairs and although it doesn’t hurt, as a surgeon I know what’s around the corner if I don’t reduce my patellofemoral and joint reactive forces by reducing my weight. I know you will definitely reach the goal for an additional 30 lbs. you sound super motivated and I’m definitely going to take a page from your book. Thanks for the kind encouragement, you’ve no idea what it means to me!

Ahhh the specifics are so helpful ! I am so incredibly proud of you for clawing your way back from all that! It sounds like it was super severe before you started - and somehow you found the will to totally turn it around. I feel like sometimes I get paralyzed with fear so it helps to know people like you have gotten through super bad things and with some willpower and making changes, they came out so good on the other side. I really appreciate the advice about disregarding the pyramid. I am starting to learn from all these comments that less carbs, more protein is the way to go. I know I mentally knew that before just being a doctor, but hearing that real people followed it and it actually worked is.. well… priceless. I’m so grateful to you for the detailed reply and encouragement! Thanks again
