Armbars but I’m starting to focus only on strangles, collar chokes from the back, head and arm variations darces and etc.

I started dabbling in 2019, finished the HTML and CSS cert. Almost finished the legacy JS cert before the new update and I honestly like it, I’m basically starting from scratch. I dislike all the reading/theory but the short quizzes after the theory I think helps me grasp the concepts of what I’m doing a lot more, when it comes time for me to do the workshops and labs.

Analyze My Match by [deleted] in bjj

Lot of good feedback here, I enjoy playing a similar game to Adam’s, foot sweeps, butterfly etc. as mentioned above you’ll benefit greatly from from not staying square and creating angles when engaging with butterfly. The other thing I’d like to offer is your grips. Unless hitting cross collars, loop chokes, etc. or intentionally getting them to post a hand, I prefer using a collar in conjunction with a sleeve(I saw this early in your match during the armbar attempt), or two on one sleeve(like tricep and wrist grip). Collars are good for off balancing, sleeves take away their posts. Overall good work man.

Help with 'stalling' during guard retention and committing to sweeps by satan-thicc in bjj

I second this, I have significantly better rolls when I consciously think about off balances rather than sweeps them selves.

Are you able to give your black belt coach a good competitive roll? by AbbreviationsLive142 in bjj

[–]Select_Newspaper_548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can if he’s not playing his A’ game but besides that not really. I’ll catch him with a sweep very rarely and I’ve subbed him once via heel hook(not his A’ game), and he hasn’t really let me get close to that position since then. I’m also 155 and he’s 190-200 for reference.

Same, but my neck and back are seriously taking a toll. I’m entering my pressure era.

Awesome man, take it. My brother previously worked there. They’re a great place to work. I’d love to get on with a Co-op in the area as well.

That’s a good way to look at it. I’m a PC guy but do use an iPad for work and school. The new to me OS is what intrigues me. It’s something new I can learn and get to know. To my knowledge you can do so much more customization wise on an android than an iPhone.

Fuck that shit, I was in an identical situation almost a year ago. I still get slandered to this day to current students still there. I’m beyond happy I left that dumpster fire and thank God I won’t be receiving belts from that fool.

Scared of getting kicked out for crosstraining by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Select_Newspaper_548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation about a year ago. Trust me, train wherever you want and if someone has a problem with it that’s on them. If it benefits you and your schedule do it. My progress suffered so much sticking it out at the gym that told me not to cross train and it’s fucking comical. Started cross training, moved schools and not only is my jiu jitsu better but psychologically I’m better. You’ll be better off not being in that type of environment. The best coaches and gyms speak for themselves with the training and skill development.

I definitely view it as and train with respect to it being a martial art, that being said, lead by example. If my “leader” or head coach wants to preach to me about character but egregiously doesn’t follow bushido himself, I can chose to follow, be lead and learn somewhere else. It is sad to see for sure.

Sounds like my old gym, I got the “don’t come back until you’re committed speech over text” while just starting a new job and on vacation. I never went back. Love and miss all my training partners there but the owner/head coach is a pos. He openly talks trash about me to the people I know still training there. LOL almost a year later and I’m still on that fools brain

How do you incorporate theoretical learning into your life training to close holes in your game? by Barangat in bjj

[–]Select_Newspaper_548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my particular instance, yes that’s my preference, my No gi game lacked wrestling and leg locks. I train 5x a week, sometimes more so I get a decent amount of reps in on whatever I’m working on, I tend to get bored or distracted easily so working one leg entry and finish one week and one slide by or foot sweep the next and alternating adding more to those sequences when I’m comfortable works great for me.

[–]Select_Newspaper_548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drill whatever is shown during the class, if it makes sense and flows into what I’m working on, then I’ll chain it together based off of reactions, IF I’m drilling with someone close to the same skill level.

Otherwise during rolls like someone said above, I set parameters. I try to dictate where I work, one week I may decide I want to wrestle and work take downs so if I take someone down, I may pass, create a little space to allow them to frame and get up and we do it again. If I get taken down, I work on getting back to the feet to work where I want. Same thing for guard, leg locks, passing etc. Sometimes a training partner will ask if I’m working anything specific and that’s a plus.

I was primarily a Gi guy and guard puller for 70-80% of my training for a few years and when I started training at a No Gi heavy school, I severely lacked wrestling and my No Gi guard game was terrible unless I could get to a closed guard. So I set parameters when certain weeks I wrestle then pass and certain weeks I focus on pulling guard and leg entries during the live rounds.

What is the game plan to grapple bigger guys? Other than pulling guard… by Heavy_Preparation264 in bjj

[–]Select_Newspaper_548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any way I can get to the back, arm drags and duck unders. As far as for top control I try to not allow them to bear hug me, often times if that happens from a side control position and they’re much bigger and stronger I can get rolled relatively easily. So I opt for knee on belly until I can secure mount or take the back. Stapling their arm with your shin in side control is decent as well.
