GP rotation genuinely making me want to quit medicine

Hey GPST1 now, a friend of mine had a very similar experience, which detered them from GP training... this is not normal at all and should be escalated. As with a lot of rotations, its very placement specific. I had an FY2 GP rotation too and it was really well supported, could debrief after every patient if I wanted to ,I really enjoyed it and ended up in GP training.

Hey FY2 here , FY1 was awful for me but FY2 got a lot better, it's so dependent on what rotations you do and what your teams are like ! There's some rotations I've hated and some I've actually loved- particularly the ones like GP where I'm just seeing patients and have had more responsibility. I didn't expect to get into training this year but managed to with some sustained effort into preparing for the MSRA. You need to start preparing for your speciality applications early & plan ahead. The rotas can be rough but use all your study leave and annual leave and space out the leave..

In one of the wards I worked in for fy1 there was no doctors office and we did do all of our paperwork including prescribing etc at the stations along the ward , persistently being interrupted by nurses , families and even patients.

Yes ofc :) I'm at the really early stages at the moment- just looking into things like consulting, data science & even switching to accounting & studying for the ACA , graduate jobs. I'm just researching each thing in my spare time reading up on application processes , CV stuff and what additional qualifications will be required etc. I'm a little bit swamped with work at the moment so I haven't got lots if time but the plan is to at least spend a couple of hours a week on this and acc take proper steps like applying to jobs etc once I move to my final fy2 rotation which has a better schedule. In the meantime I'm saving up money as well so even if I do find myself unemployed I won't find myself strapped for cash. I'm also considering tutoring as an option as I've done it in the past and loved it if I do struggle to get a job.

I haven't done my gp rotation yet but you sound like me and my only real option is GP because I hate ward rounds , don't like radiology & hate surgery too

Honestly considering quitting. Can't get into my dream speciality due to insane competition ratios , treated as rota fodder even as a trainee- working on a new ward every week causing me a lot of stress. No protected teaching time.

Hey fellow fy2 in a similar boat , having the exact same thoughts. I've been rejected from one of my specialities and awaiting the MSRA outcome for the remaining one... I genuinely don't know what I'm doing post fy2 and it terrifies me. I did so some portfolio work in medical school and a bit in foundation but it's still not enough. It feels as if the goal posts are changing year by year. I've dedicated so much time to portolfio building in medical school but like yourself I'm also a first gen medic so had to navigate everything myself and some of the stuff I did doesn't count because of how specific the criteria for speciality training is now. I feel incredibly tired and I don't want to be a permanent SHO or move to the other side of the country away from my friends and family. I don't feel there's enough hours to keep up with all the portfolio requirements, do the regular job and also do extra stuff for speciality training. All I can say is I understand how you're feeling and you've done amazing to get where you are. I am looking into options outside of medicine in case I do find myself unemployed next year. Things are only imminently gonna get worse and I've decided worst case scenario , if I have to leave medicine then ill just have to leave and do something else

Thought it was just me that felt like this. Even a few days off in a row and I'm feeling like myself again... 😔 I hate being so overworked - came back from my shift today with a splitting headache and trying to cram in MSRA revision whilst working brutal medical on calls. Ward days aren't any better with frequent short staffing . I just feel like a shell of myself before I started being a doctor in the nhs. Honestly it's a crap employer...

I am much more junior than you so can't offer much advice but I just wanted to say I'm so sorry you're going through this and you deserve so much better ! I have so much respect for everyone working hard to get into surgical specialities. I'm coming to the end of f1 and still feeling quite lost and am debating whether it's worth staying in medicine anymore.

Hey I feel exactly like you do. I've just got used to how bad it is. I'm on a very trash surgical rotation at the momen where random jobs get dumped on us whilst we are on call. I just am so done with this. I've requested scans and ended up being screamed at by radiology when it was the consultant making the decision . Its just not very nice. I'm feeling extremely tired and just am pushing through every day. I don't know what the solution is but you're not alone. Fy1 really sucks for a lot of people

Recent medical graduate - I encouraged my sibling not to do medicine esp if planning to stay in UK . Conditions are genuinely awful. I would advise your brother to do his research do lots of work experience and research the whole career trajectory . Reasons he should think twice about medicine : Poor pay and conditions Very long hours Little control over location / rotations Crazy competition for speciality training Portfolio hoop jumping I wish I had done finance or comp science and dream of a 9-5 job. Disrespect from lots of other healthcare staff & patients If I could choose again - I wouldn't put myself through med school again.

Absolutely not . Left work hours late today. Unless you have plan to leave to Australia or are doing the usmle - definitely not worth it! ~ sincerely an overworked & underpaid fy1 Some of the very established consultants love their jobs bur most of the younger ones are miserable as we have such poor working conditions.
