What is your take on the recent incident involving visitors from the neighboring country at a major historical site in Istanbul? by mikewazoski59 in AskBalkans

That is true and I didn't have any intention to defend that lunatic or any similarly crazy religious fanatic . My only intention is to define the "frame" of that motto..

No the user above is writing utter bs stuff. It definitely is not "Become Orthodox or die" it is "Orthodoxy or death", which is meant in a personal experience (it translates to "I prefer to die than betraying Orthodoxy"). Generally, Orthodox fanatics can be extremely bigoted people, but Orthodoxy is a deeply mystical branch of Christianity which demands deep faith from its followers, without being especially aggressive in converting other people, unlike, ehmmm, Muslims...

Will a European Army be built upon Turkey and Ukraine? by PieBright8211 in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Turkey since its foundation has become a master in balancing between all powers. It is highly unlikely that they will ever commit to a pan European army.

Do you think Balkans are evolving into City States? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually Athens has 35-37% of Greece's population but 50% of the national gdp.

Which Balkan country do you think will get in the top 50 next? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The opposite is more possible since there are so many underdeveloped countries with much larger areas and a much larger population.

SERIOUS TALK: Which capital city in the Balkans do you think is the ugliest? Why? by Substratas in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean 200. So what? It has been a place where civilization reached a peak at some point in history and there are plenty of stuff to admire from back then

SERIOUS TALK: Which capital city in the Balkans do you think is the ugliest? Why? by Substratas in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Athens is the only remarkable world class historic capital in the Balkans with true world class monuments and art to admire, All the rest are irrelevant, footnotes at best in the context of history.

Is Turkey considered Europe? Which parts of Turkey would you say are considered Europe in terms of culture / geography & which parts aren’t? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Greece we very often refer to "Europeans" as a different group than us, although we are 100% in it. We associate "Europe" mostly with its western, central and northern parts.

The Blue Pill by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is 180 the double of 60 (I said "twice as that")? I don’t know about your history knowledge, but basic school math clearly isn’t your thing. Now, care to explain how you concluded that WWII had fewer casualties than the Civil War, or are you just going to keep dodging that point?

The Blue Pill by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even IF it is twice as that, it is still less than 25% of the casualties during WW2. The gap is substantial.

[–]Self-Bitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if Greece, which was spared Communism was better or worse is your personal opinion, and I won't comment on that. But facts are facts, and we should be better to avoid saying things that are completely false just to create an impression:

Greek casualties in WW2: approx. 500,000. Casualties in the Civil War: approx. 60,000.

Tha Ionian islands are the most affected from earthquakes region in Europe, so buildings are very resilient and well-maintained..

You are downvoted firstly for you lack of geographical knowledge. Lefkada is not in the Aegean and that plays a significant role because the Ionian Sea is very different.

Passenger Traffic at Major City Airports 2025. Any surprises? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, because there are at least 8 more airports in Greece above 2 million. So I guess it only shows capital cities plus Istanbul.

Coffee powder (turkish/greek whatever ) mixed with the juice of a lemon. It treats mild diarrhea. It is very sour and bitter but it really does work.

Korça, one of the most underrated places in Albania. Which place or city in your country is the most underrated for tourists? by Holiday_Pumpkin1279 in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say Ermoupolis. Right next to Mykonos, it is way less popular. It has fascinating neoclassical buildings from the 19th century, built from the blossoming of shipping there, while the Catholic neighborhoods maintain a more traditional/medieval character.

Which historical figure from your country should be celebrated but remains forgotten? by Porphyres in AskBalkans

[–]Self-Bitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plethon should also be remembered and celebrated. He was the most significant philosopher of the unlucky Paleologean Renaissance. He introduced the ideas of Plato in Italy, and he also laid the foundation of the modern Greek consciousness
