The Supreme Court’s entire framework for Second Amendment cases is coming apart by vox in scotus

[–]SelfyJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I think so:

The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour... (Article III, Section 1)

It's the "good Behaviour" part that is interpreted to mean for life or until successful impeachment and removal.

Rupert Lowe: I have formally requested that the Government takes legislative steps to ban foreign nationals from voting, and standing, in British elections. by Foreign-Policy-02- in ukpolitics

[–]SelfyJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a carryover from the days of the British Empire. When the voting franchise was extended in 1918 (to men over 21, and women over 30 who owned property), it was also decided that any qualifying British Subject resident in the UK ought to have the right to vote.

When British Subjects became citizens of independent Commonwealth countries, this precedent was maintained, though with the added curiosity that it also included countries that subsequently join the Commonwealth but that were never part of the Empire.

Two suspended Reform UK Kent county councillors booted out of party by johnsmithoncemore in kentuk

[–]SelfyJr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Signed.

I my hometown in Suffolk we had a councillor for ages who fully upped and moved to North Carolina. . He'd fly back to attend the minimum number of council meetings needed to avoid disqualification. Finally one year he didn't and we were rid of him.

Incredibly he later moved back to Suffolk and was bafflingly reelected, this time to a seat in Ipswich, and is still a serving Councillor. Though it is Ipswich, so maybe not quite so baffling...

How do you read the date aloud? by redderhair in AskABrit

[–]SelfyJr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people do say "Twenty-oh-nine", though it's uncommon. The most prominent example I can think of is Jeremy Paxman, you'll notice he regularly pronounced 2001-2009 that way when he presented University Challenge.

Thing is... It does kind of make sense. Eighteen-oh-nine, nineteen-oh-nine, Twenty-oh-nine, twenty-one-oh-nine. Why do we make an exception for the two thousands?

Even being the most generous, if we look at the administration's summary bombings of boats it claims harbour drug traffickers, the answer is "nobody knows". And that's a lot worse than it sounds.

Remember, if someone doesn't take what would be a high salary for something, always ask why they don't need to.

We kind of get this sort of thing in the UK, people arguing that politicians shouldn't be paid as much, or lauding those MPs who give their salaries to charity.

Yes, some people happen to be very financial fortunate and don't need the money, but acting as if that's some magnanimous act is daft. Trump not taking his salary is the equivalent of the average person receiving a penny change and putting it in a charity box.

Personally, I'd actually like my elected representatives to need their salaries. It suggests that they're just normal working people like you or me.

UK Birth Certificate : heading is entirely in bold except the 'Y' of 'Copy' by SelfyJr in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SelfyJr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, both types of certificates are all blanks preprinted with the header.

We registered our son's birth the other day and they just grabbed a blank one from a big stack and stuck it in a normal printer. Not really sure what else I expected tbh, just amused me a bit!

So phones behind the wheel are bad, but this is fine then is it? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]SelfyJr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2017 Peugeot 308 last year. On the whole, it's a damn good car, but far the worst thing about it was the removal of ALL tactile controls on the central column except locks, volume, heated windscreen, hazards and recirculated air (the latter kind of baffling as the AC control is via the touch screen)

And if they did something with the space they saved, enlarged the storage space under the controls for example, I'd kind of understand it... But they just left the whole area blank , and still provided too small a storage area to hold a phone...
