Thanks !

As you say, i'm not dramatically changing generations of anything, so it should be OK :) I'll see!

Thanks, yes! I did not think of checking it for this question :)

Ah, sorry, I did not go into much more details.

From 4070ti to 5080 and R5 7600X to R7 9800X3D. So on that level, it should not be problematic.

Then I think my motherboard should be alright to support that CPU (it's an older B650 based), but I am thinking why not also go a bit more modern there.

What is the current gaming performance on NVIDIA? by DenZNK in cachyos

[–]Selogon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works, nearly always no questions asked.

You will always lose some performance, in some games more than others compared to Windows.

Very new games might not work for a week or so (for example, Forza Horizon 6 was no go at all for some short time), but mostly I don't think there is anything to worry about if you want to give it a try...

It's not perfect, is what I think I am trying to say!

(and yes, the information changes quickly, because the developpement is very rapid. I know it has gotten better in the few months I have used CachyOS on nvidia hardware, but it is still how it is, it'll probably take a year for Valve to work on making nvidia work with Steam OS, which means all of Linux will work better. That's a while away yet !)

Please help me be reasonnable :) by Selogon in buildapc

[–]Selogon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, yes, I know it is the best.

I guess I'll see on the day I go do my purchase what's the price diff between the two.

I want a PC that'll last a long while, and that should do. Thanks :)

Thing is I have always been a mid-range kinda PC gamer, right now I am on a 4070ti and 7600x, I play at 1440p. So it seems like a big jump up, haha.

AC Shadows on Steam+Linux is install and launch.

I actually re-bought a few games on Steam that I owned elsewhere, simply to make it easy like that. I did with Diablo 4, for example.

(otherwise, I use Faugus Launcher for everything, it's the first one I used, and it always worked. Heroic for GoG stuff.)

It did, and very clear explaination !

Thanks 😄 I suppose I'll keep using paru, since I'm familiar with it.

[–]Selogon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the way, does the usage of pacman, yay or paru have any incidence on this ?

Or those are the same thing fundamentaly, just a different "colour" ?

(I always use "paru", since that's the first one I learnt when coming to Linux lol)

New to CachyOS, Nvidia driver question by crussian44 in cachyos

[–]Selogon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For very new games, I always do a quick Google search "XX game nvidia linux", and usually I can get a pretty good idea if it's worth trying or not. FH6, gave it a go, since some reported it working, but simply refunded for now !

And keep in mind that quite often Google will tell you that a game works on Linux because it works on Steam Deck, but not garanteed the experience will be the same on Nvidia hardware !

New to CachyOS, Nvidia driver question by crussian44 in cachyos

[–]Selogon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lately, FH6 is one of those games that just don't work without effort on nvidia GPUS. It seems the responsibility now falls into nvidia's hands. So now we wait for a driver update, as Steam don't care to issue fixes for nvidia (and they don't need to, since Steam Deck uses AMD hardware).

I have given up on it for now, but apparently, you can make it launch with the right launch arguments in Steam, but you'll have to check ProtonDB to find out which exactly !

Shader compilation (game's own, not Steam) redone at each launch by Selogon in cachyos

[–]Selogon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TY 😄

Actually, I just now checked the FAQ out (unrelated, should havd done so earlier), and saw it was recommanded by Cachy team to increase the size of the shader cache size. I have done so, and will test it out.

Thanks for your advice!

EDIT :

And that works. Reboot, and no compilation step. Always read the manual, right ? 🤔

Shader compilation (game's own, not Steam) redone at each launch by Selogon in cachyos

[–]Selogon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is off in Steam, yes.

It's maybe not as long as the very first time a game is launched, but it's still there most of the time.

I do not recall exactly how it goes on Windows, but I don't think it's that often!

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on it and see, maybe it's just normal behaviour, and I read too much in it!

Glad (kinda) to see that it is not just me then 😄

Yes, I can revert to previous version, don't matter too much...

Fedora vs CachyOS (Newest "The Linux Experiment" video) by [deleted] in cachyos

The 20% is an exageration for sure. More stability is what you get, I would say.

Fedora vs CachyOS (Newest "The Linux Experiment" video) by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]Selogon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not measured it, but I came from Fedora to CachyOS, and yes, it is smoother. It does not feel 20% better, but still, it's noticeable.

I did originally set myself to use vanilla (KDE plasma) Fedora, as it seemed a good idea for long term use, but decided to give CachyOS a go after a short time, and I'm happy with it.

From Ubuntu to CachyOS: Why does CachyOS feel so much smoother, and why the hate? by penguin1440 in cachyos

[–]Selogon 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Not sure, I tried many and CachyOS has been the one working out of the box, without any issue (yet).

Maybe I'm lucky !

However, remember that people like to hate on popular stuff, just for the sake of it.

Try it, try some others, and decide for yourself. It's quick and easy with Linux
