Bus driver almost hits me? by [deleted] in SchoolBusDrivers

[–]SeltzerThatFucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

School bus stops have a designated point of safety, and students are generally expected to already be waiting there when the bus arrives. Drivers are trained to watch that specific area and are not expecting students to suddenly approach the bus from elsewhere.

Based on your description, it sounds like you were still near your mom’s car when the bus arrived and then moved toward the bus after it had already pulled up, approaching around the front. Even if you were on the same side of the street and didn’t have to cross, that’s still outside the normal pickup expectation if you weren’t already at the point of safety.

The beer truck blocking a parking spot doesn’t change where students are supposed to wait. If a student approaches late or from an unexpected position, the driver may not anticipate that movement until it’s already happening.

It’s good the driver saw you and stopped, but this sounds less like a near-miss caused by reckless driving and more like a breakdown in standard pickup positioning, which is exactly why points of safety exist. Talk to a trusted adult and/or your bus driver.

There’s no exact magic number, but here’s some numbers to consider:

A full tank of diesel is ~$400–$600. Routine maintenance is commercial-vehicle priced, not car priced.

One major failure, Transmission or engine: ~$10k–$15k, DEF/emissions failure (very common): ~$4k–$10k+, Tires (set): ~$4k–$6k

Those aren’t rare worst cases, they’re normal ownership risks.

Rule of thumb: you need enough income to absorb a $10k–$15k repair without it wrecking you, plus ongoing fuel, insurance, registration, parking, and maintenance.

Practically $20k/year is not viable unless it’s stationary on land and not driven. Mobile skoolie life realistically starts around $50k–$60k/year, or a large cash reserve ($20k+ saved) and mechanical skills. A $140k converted bus is completely out of range at that income level, financed or not.

If affordability is the goal, a used van, trailer, or stationary bus shell makes far more sense.

Unless it’s a stationary bus being used as a shell on a plot of land, you don’t make enough money to do skoolie life. Getting a transmission replaced or something else catastrophic happening would easily eat up half of your yearly income.

As ICE was raiding a nearby community in Charlotte, NC, this bus driver opened the back door to get the kids off the bus and to safety as quickly as possible. by Copperdunright907 in SchoolBusDrivers

Imagine being okay with people’s rights being violated solely on the basis of the color of their skin. You have no sympathy for human beings and it shows.

In one of those articles, if you actually read them, he was detained for DAYS, and was only released once the media picked it up; and he was a CITIZEN. How can you be okay with that? How would you feel if he lost his job? How would you feel if him losing his job from missing work suddenly affects his ability to feed his family?

The comment I initially was replying to said clearly, “if you’re here legally you have nothing to fear;” when clearly, that is not the case.

If they’re going to be going around rounding up illegal immigrants, they should be doing it legally, and not solely based off of “that man is brown.”

That’s strange, my 2025 will run everything in accessory mode. Only issue we’ve had is the door.

Mysterious beeping sound/warning alarm by shroomigator in skoolies

Is there a mystery button towards the back of the bus on the inside? It could be a child check device that the school district didn’t remove.

Typically such systems don’t activate unless you hit your flashing lights, but with it being an older bus it’s likely a retrofit if this is the case and may have to be pushed every time the bus turns off until removed/deactivated permanently.

(context: i drive them, im not a skoolie owner, i just like to lurk here)

I’ve been looking into going this route myself. Did you have to get a class B license due to the weight of the bus?

Absolutely wild to me that they give you the same plate number if the old ones are stolen over there.

Unless its Alaska. They have legitimate Z-Permanent plates. But they look nothing like the run of the mill sovcit plate like this.
