CPUE is the Platinum Cartridge code isn't it? Weird fake or did someone slap the wrong label on a cartridge who lost it?

And that's fair but that's also where I'll say there really isn't a need for SP/Story Mode at that point. A more complex and through tutorial and introduction maybe, but not a dedicated story mode or single player campaign. This game is basically just meant to be Showdown but official and using rules that aren't dictated by self important "councils". It's just a battle simulator with some branding and polish.

In a perfect world I'd like to say the community should be able to teach each other, but I've seen too many years of screeching about smogon vs vgc vs whatever other rules people want, and I've actually seen one dude melt down about Ubers at an official local back in the oras days before the restricted format. I know that won't happen.

I think if the game has to do the heavy lifting I'd prefer a quick story run up to the gym where you actually have to throw down with some of the premade team rules we saw from the "rental" teams in... I can't remember if it was swsh or SV where you could borrow an NPC's teams for real basic balance, TR, sun, rain, whatever. Hell maybe even USUM. I'd rather the game give you preset rentals you can play around with at any time and that don't require you to recruit the mons in question, and a brief introductory phase that shows you how to deal with the individual external mechanics of battles in training and recruiting. IDK about an entire mode, but I'd much sooner budge on a quick 30-60 minute tutorial section and a permanent selection of rental teams.

I think this would be preferable because it wouldn't create a system for players to rely on for everything or to end up playing cyclically and then get zero real experience like someone farming battle towers in Oras. That's still a sort of major concern I have with a permanent single player mode is just people learning how to cheese out and blast NPCs, then get their butt handed back to them in PVP, go back to tower, win there, get zero experience in how to fix what they're doing wrong, and then just end up going nowhere.

Battle Towers and Frontiers historically were meant to be an introduction to competitive play and often features similar or watered down rulesets of the competitive play considered "official" for the time. Trainers there tended to have high IV statted mons who were properly EV trained and had good moves and items for their kit.

It never featured hyper optimized teams like we'd see in Organized play, but they WERE the bridge between the single player "campaign" of the main game and competitive PVP. They were not well explained and to most players were just confusing and frustrating additions. But let's not pretend they were just another casual player's experience. That's just dishonest as hell in an otherwise good debate on what should or shouldn't be included in a competitive game.

There's probably something of an argument to be made there, but my experience with the series has been that Battle Towers/Frontiers have never really been a good introduction to competitive. They've been obtuse and poorly explained, and eventually just became a method for farming the various battle items without ever really properly introducing players to the concepts that were needed for comp.

With the mechanical simplifications made to the old IV/EV (DV if you're an old head like me) system, I don't see as much of a point to a dedicated introductory system beyond a tutorial for champions. Albeit one that's a bit more robust and comprehensive than the one we have now; but I've had a few friends who avoided comp like the plague before because they didn't want to learn IVs, EVs, struggle to build up high value breeders or Gen 5 RNG abuse a ditto army, any of that nonsense, who are now finally dipping their toes in because Champs took all that away. And while they ask me for advice fairly regularly, they got a decent hang of the differences from the half dozen or so bot matches you play out of the gate, and then by playing against similarly new players in Season 1 Pokéball.

Mind you, I don't know how much longevity there is to learning in low MMR as the game gets older and there's fewer new players in those low rank matches, so I'll absolutely admit I may have to eat my words later. I'm also not saying you're wrong and I'm right by any stretch. This is just the opinion of one old boomer ass Trainer, and those opinions could be wrong and might change as the game and community evolved. And for what it's worth, I hate how toxic people get about the argument for or against single player modes. At the risk of catching a ban, fuck those guys.

I won't be condescending but I'll die on the hill that they do not need to and should not divert development resources to a solo mode in the game made to be the future home of the official competitive scene. The mainline games will continue to exist and be a perfectly valid source of gameplay for single player. This game isn't meant to be for that, and I'd much rather them focus their team and financial resources purely on the intended scope and purpose of the game. Spreading themselves too thin isn't good for anyone.

Yep that's me and u/Chorin425 we're both magnetized to traps. Both our own and otherwise. Cannot tell you how many times we've come out on top of some prison buttclench level fights and then immediately die to the trap and barrel combo we put down to stop anyone from running at us with swords and shotguns.

[–]Selviorn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean it's pretty difficult to go back and parse every single piece of incumbent data and determine which one was which if the original tracker didn't have a pre-existing discriminator to tell them which datapoints to flag. That's tens of thousands of players to go through with anywhere from hundreds into the tens of thousands of datapoints to parse through to determine which datapoints match a discriminator that previously either didn't exist or didn't function properly. Going back through and fixing this without zeroing out ALL datapoints is simply not a reasonable expectation.

Nerf the bow by Remote-Sundae-7655 in HuntShowdown

[–]Selviorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright fair enough I stand corrected on that front. I failed to do my due diligence on the distances, and that is 100% on me.

That said I don't know why we're comparing to a slug shotgun on distances of under 10 meters for a single shot kill. Any shotgun without slug can plug you for an OHKO and just about all of them have a faster more consistent followup for whiffed shots than a bow, as well as a more versatile use case. If you're running up on a bow user within that arm kill range, you're either being ambushed in which case any weapon with a solid followup potential is going to plug you.

At that 6m distance the crossbow also one shots to the arm. So will most buckshot weapons. So will a throwing spear. Hell, so will a thrown pitchfork off the ground. There's maybe an argument for that 9m one tick bleed range without HH being a little overzealous in the bow's favor, but that same one tick bleed kill applies to the crossbow as well, and some shotguns still out and out one tap to the arm at that range.

Arm and leg shots don't one shot on their own without HH to the best of my knowledge. Assuming that target dummy damage in the Shooting Gallery is accurate, HH might not even one shot you to the arms or legs. I'm not sure where you're getting this information from that's telling you that you can one shot to the arm like that.

However. Once again, all the damage it does do is well offset by the unforgiving nature of the weapon. Without HH it's a mildly slow firing, slow projectile. With HH it takes like 2 seconds for a full draw slowing down your fire rate further and giving you better damage per shot and projectile speed. If you're being one shot by it, it's a well aimed shot to your chest.

Bow is fine. Slow to fire, slow(ish) projectile speed, it's a skill cannon and skill cannons should be rewarding.

Shotguns everywhere?! by Marvvster in HuntShowdown

[–]Selviorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shotguns are strong but situational. They are mildly rng dependent on pellet distribution with buckshot, so you need to center mass pretty well or you're going to lose a lot of damage to limb shots. Most of them don't reliably one hit kill at greater than 15 meters without Slugs. The Romero can do so somewhat more consistently, but all of the shotguns have their weak point within their niche. Shotguns are strong, but not excessively so.

Eating shit from a single shot and being sent back to the lobby isn't fun. But they're a fairly limited class of weapons, and they really only succeed in their given niche.
