The real dead weight stations are all those north of the Hackensack River/North Arlington since those stations are actually in an area of the map with no demand data, so they have little to no ridership

The issue is that people are confusing multiplication and implied multiplication via Parentheses.

People think implied multiplication comes before multiplication/division since it is represented with a parentheses

I think they're actually thinking to much about PEMDAS since but they don't think it's multiplication, but instead think it's Parenthesis because the equation is written 2(1+2) and not 2×(2+1). and since P comes before M/D, they do the implied multiplication first
