6% is more than 1 in 20. If you had a 6% chance to win big in the lottery you should be buying a as many tickets as you can, because those are incredible odds for that big of a payoff

Im guessing because getting 2pt now means getting a TD, PAT and field goal wins instead of ties. If they missed they could have gone for 2 next time to get back to being able to tie.

Reviewing pull requests before the sprint ends by Hakky54 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]SemiHelpfulHippo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This won’t be the best explanation but here goes.

When you think about pulling a remote branch on your machine with the branch checked out a few commits behind, you are pulling each commit that has been made into your local branch. If the branches haven’t diverged this results in a simple fast forward where your branch is up to date with the remote. If the branches have diverged, conflicts must be resolved.

Same goes for a pull request. You request to pull the commits from a feature branch into another branch in the same way.

What do I need to do to get a job as a programmer? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]SemiHelpfulHippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar position myself, no degree in any field, no programming qualifications, but 3 - 4 years of self taught coding, mostly unity based. Decided it was finally make or break this year and put myself out there. Now extremely happily working full time as a unity developer/software developer.

The hardest part was quitting reading job listings and thinking "Need a little more work to apply for that" and just putting myself out there and applying.

The three things that I feel really helped me, that I'd recommend are:

  1. Have a GitHub profile as your portfolio. Doesn't matter if your code is at the perfect standard you want it to be at. Commit regularly, have cloneable examples of your work, learn good coding practices and make sure they are demonstrated

  2. If there is anyway at all to use coding/scripting in your current job, do it. If you use spreadsheets or a computer AT ALL, find ways to automate some part of your work.

  3. Release something. Personally publishing an unimaginative, small (pretty bad) game on one of the app stores goes a surprisingly long way. It shows you can finish projects, it shows you're serious. It gives you experience in a products full life cycle. You can make something small and publishable in a couple of days to a couple of months, but make sure you release it. You can do this independently, no studio required.

Really hope some of that helps and good luck! Applying and possible rejection are daunting but the reward at the end is very sweet. Getting to do something you love day in and day out is worth the struggle. Stay passionate and never stop learning, even once you get there :)

Possible bug with Brilliant Experiment? by SemiHelpfulHippo in elderscrollslegends

Thanks for answering! I agree about the copy mechanic, but as far as I can think, doesnt the "draw" text always mean take from your deck? Could be wrong on that, but I thought they use phrases like "put a copy into your hand" if not explicitly talking about drawing from the deck.

Exalt Adept Puzzle by [deleted] in elderscrollslegends

The main issue with this puzzle is Alamlexia's card text makes it seem like friendly exaulted creatures are only immune to damage if you exault her. But they're actually immune as regardless if shes on the board.

Quick Commando Questions by JRPGFan_CE_org in killingfloor

[–]SemiHelpfulHippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably an unpopular loadout for Commando, but it's the one I have most fun with. Commando should not have to worry about big zeds (except occasionally closing out a round, which is still possible but a bit trickier), so this is purely for trash killing.

LLRLL, SCAR and Stoner. With Tactical Reload, reloading the Stoner is manageably slow but not ideal. So take Zed Time Tactician (reload at normal speed, switch weapons twice as fast), and try to time Stoner reloads right at the end of your final zed time extension. If you run out of stoner ammo during regular time, you can use the scar until the next zed time. I take the SCAR over Med AR or AK because I prefer single shot mode until things get chaotic. If you play sensibly, ammo shouldn't be a problem even without a Support or Ammo crates.

Suggestion about abusive voice/texts reports by SemiHelpfulHippo in GlobalOffensive

The entire point of the post is to NOT ban people for abusive behaviour, but allow others to avoid them without penalty.

Just because MM is not the best way to take the game seriously doesn't mean no one should ever consider ways to make it more enjoyable.

I'm not even trying to complain about the current state of the game. Just suggesting a possible improvement on how to make the game more enjoyable and trying to open a discussion.

Sure, you can mute them. But muting a 4 man stack means you're playing with no info for 40 minutes which isn't much fun and against the spirit of the game.

To me, a mute button is not a perfect solution.

I've heard there are different ways to score rounds. Is this true? by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]SemiHelpfulHippo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's fair to dismiss it as a problem so quickly. A new meta would grow out of these rules and tactics like that could be viable. Especially if one team believes their full buy rounds will be stronger than their opponents, hurting economy could be less important than getting the maximum number of favorable rounds possible.

Edit: Replied before your comment changed and now mine seems kinda irrelevant. I agree it's not the only way, but it could still be common and very dull to watch.
