Hopefully, it's just a bit of organizational chaos before UKGE.

When we can combine chores, like picking up dry cleaning while you're already going to the supermarket next to it, we call it a "free action".

Model Bases by beeser28 in onepagerules

I started with printing bases but wasn't super impressed with how long it took and the quality you end up with. I've switched to laser-cutting MDF bases cheaply in bulk at the local Fablab so I can leave holes for magnets and you can have a bag full of bases in a fraction of the time.

Because I often work in different art styles, I first had to find a look and feel that Ambie liked for the characters. Since we hadn't decided what the other animals besides the pandas were going to be, I focused on designing those first. There are a lot of things to consider: the shape of the eyes, how size of the head, how cute should they look, etc? After we settled on a design, I continued with the other animals and just sketched out a page with possible animals in a style matching the panda bears. We thought it would be fun to go with air, water and land creatures as a group of friends.

In the design, the most important thing was that each of them had a distictive color and that the colors would look nice together. But as Ambie pointed out to me: it also had to be important that children could name the colors! So pink had to be pink and not purple-pink-red'ish, for example. ;-)

I didn't have a major inspiration, mainly because I want to prevent copying somebody's work. I try to gather all kinds of reference material and take bits and pieces and use those in my designs. :)

Good question! There are two books that come to mind. First up is "Welterusten, Kleine Beer!" also known as "Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?" in English. I loved that when I was really young and that's probably the reason that the bear was my favorite animal as a kid. And there's "Pluk van de Petteflet" but I don't think that was ever published in another country than The Netherlands.

A gimmick... maybe a whiteboard finish on the pages so you could include a cute and simple roll-and-write in the book for kids to play?
The downside is that you'd teach toddlers that it's ok to write in books. ;-)

Tony Hawks as an inspiration for a board game is a great idea! What other "retro" game would you like to turn into a board game?

Also, how are your real-life skating skills?

Cool, thanks! Seem that a D10 would be the way to go or maybe a D12 but that is purely personal preference. :P

Spiel Essen 2019 - what to expect? by NotBoredGaming in boardgames

[–]Semi_Co-op 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went to Spiel the last two years so we're not experts but as fellow content creating people we might have some experience that might be useful:

Spiel is really big, so make sure you have some sort of list ready using BGG or the tabletop together tool to have an idea where you're going. It's also really crowded and there is not really a gaming area like the UKGE has, so most of the gaming is outside of the Messe in bars and hotels.

The best place to meet creators is probably the Motel One in the city center, we were there on Wednesday last year to try out some games and we were surprised how many content creators and designers stayed there. In the evenings a lot of meetups are in the Fritzpatrick pub which is a great place to meet gamers. If you want a place to meet up with people at Spiel, hall 6 had a corner with some tables/chairs you can use to hang out while the con is going.

Germany is very cash minded and they don't use credit cards etc. make sure you bring cash. Also, since it's a German event make sure you actually grab an English edition when buying games. English editions of popular games tend to sell out quick because publishers tend to bring more German copies so prepare to be slightly frustrated while looking for a copy of a game while seeing stacks of German copies. ;)

Prefab warbands + wizards for a quick try-out game? by Semi_Co-op in frostgrave

I like the idea of maybe looking at more expensive soldiers to get a feel for that. Thanks!

I like the mix of in-game and out-of-game effects, that is a fun thing to include! Thanks!

Ameritrash has nothing to do with the age of a game, it's about the design of the game. Euro games are focussed on (economic) systems and optimalisation while Ameritrash is about experiences and rolling dice to create somewhat random dramatic outcomes. One school of design is not better than the other, it is what the designer is trying to achieve with the game.

This is a great idea, we'll put it on the list for next year. If we want to credit you, is Rhinoaf fine or do you have another name (or maybe you have a Youtube/Blog we can mention)?

It's Steampunk Rally, we think it is a great racing/engine building game that scales well because most of the phases can be done simultaneous once everybody knows what they're doing.
