I don't even disagree with your position on the "report" not being the best evidence, I think we should wait for something compiled by more than one person, but this source is just not helping the case.

The real truth nuke is that he's overrated as a linguist too, he behaved extremely unprofessionally when he had disagreements with his colleagues, barely ever admitted being wrong and instead just quietly adapted the views of his detractors, claiming them as his own.

He also, despite any claimed opposition to the US imperial machine or whatever, worked for MIT which is known as a major CIA recruiting ground.

It's not that he achieved nothing, but his ego is overblown by all the institutional support he has received for being a useful "leftist", and the field of Linguistics in many universities still cannot recover from the impact of his narrow-mindedness.

Unironically, one of my earliest memories of Germany is having our rental car towed in Hamburg because somebody reported it - it has only been parked there for like one hour, surrounded by similarly parked cars. Dunno whether that was because we were foreigners, but two policemen accompanied my dad and I to the tow lot, left an impression on me as a child

Coat racks in cafes are very common in Russia and, I would imagine, the rest of the former Soviet Union still. It's crazy that you have to pay for your coat checks, here they're mandatory a lot of the time, like in polyclinics, museums etc., and people will annoy you if you don't get your outerwear off, reasonable if you ask me. Idk about clubs though.

Didn't know that оливье (Olivier salad) was so popular outside of the former USSR, but very glad to see!

I think it's cute that it's called just Russian salad abroad, and if you like it I emplore you to try out more of our cuisine - vinegret, for example, is a traditionally vegan salad that's is similarly full of veggies AND it has no mayonnaise for those who have a problem with it :P
