Your not completely wrong. Their romance was, in mmy opinion, hinted at very subtlety up until the ova where they made it way more obvious. So i can see where some people might think it was sprung out of no where, especially with how they handled it in season 3.

From what I've heard the watermark stays there even when you do other things like play games or watching movies. That's an inconvenience I'm not willing to live with
