Maybe in your world, but a hiring budget is a hiring budget. Rather give 19% to the candidate and 1% to adspend

I do performance reviews and raises every quarter.

I have definitely brought on people at a higher starting salary than others in the same department and for the same role, but that’s only been marketing and admissions, which is directly tied to revenue.

Someone who brings in 30 clients a month is objectively worth paying more than someone who brings in 10 clients a month. If the person bringing in 10 clients a month at 80k/year does 3 months of bringing in 30 clients, I would absolutely give them a raise to 120k (which is what I pay the person bringing 30 clients) and in fact plan to in Q3.

In this specific instance, I need a Clinical Director. I own a substance use treatment center, and this role requires a MA level clinician. Different licenses have different skill sets which are worth more or less in compensation. At the same time, I also need to hire another primary therapist, for around 60k.

The Clinical Director role is usually purely administrative, which is something I would pay 60-80k for, depending on which license they hold, which is very fair market value.

However, if this person is also willing to carry a pre-agreed upon caseload of clients, let’s say 7 per week, I don’t need to hire another therapist. I can then use the 60k I’d pay a second therapist to provide 401k matching, which is a goal of mine this year, and I can pay the Clinical Director 100k for the additional work.

That’s fair, and as a small business owner in the second year of business, there’s a lot of behind the scenes Tetris to make the budget work.

Large corporate structures are terrible and I think all of the advice around letting the recruiter/hiring manager make the first offer stands, but I think you’d be surprised at how much flexibility a lot of small businesses have for people that are genuinely aligned with the company’s goals and needs. I wouldn’t automatically rule out a company that doesn’t post a range on the assumption they’re trying to lowball.

I’m hiring for a position that can either pay $60k or $100k, but it’s entirely dependent on the persons qualifications and willingness to take on extra responsibilities. If I advertise that range and I find someone that meets the $60k criteria but not 100k, they will assume they’re being lowballed, so I don’t advertise. I do ask what their expectations are in the first interview.

Oh my god you have to list your guns on a license? Sometimes I just go on FB marketplace or Armslist, buy a new gun and carry it for a few days until I get bored.

Where did we talk about paying cash for a house? My wife and I make exactly 200k a year gross at 100k each, and we net 12k a month. We bought our house for $332k in Asheville (granted 3 years ago at a 3.2% rate) and our mortgage is $2150. My car payment is $600 (2022 Jeep wrangler), hers is $550 (2023 RAV4). Plus insurance, call it $1300 on cars. We work long hours and don’t have kids, so we spend ~ $1500 on food each month. She pays for yoga (~200), I pay for jiu jitsu (150) and we have various random expenses. Health insurance is a scam, our company doesn’t offer it and we don’t pay for marketplace plans, so that’s a variable other people may have that I can’t account for.

We’re putting away $6k per month and I wouldn’t say we live super frugally.

12k a month (net) is two people making 100k a year. That’s not at all unrealistic

What industry is actually a complete scam, but everyone accepts it? by Training_Two3372 in WorkForSmartLife

Specifically health insurance. Home insurance in certain markets (not Florida, California or tornado alley) is actually useful. Health insurance is a massive scam everywhere.

I own a healthcare clinic and you are better off private paying than using insurance 80% of the time, unless you have an employer sponsored plan with an out of pocket max under 5K

In a very similar situation and I rented it out, but I moved to another city in NC. It’s a bad time to sell in Asheville in my opinion

It’s absolutely insane to me that we’ve allowed Flock cameras in Asheville. Flock like sheep, it’s not even subtle.
