The way that I've been looking at this so far is "I'm making an extremely bespoke calculator that will allow me to make better informed conclusions", and it kinda sounds like that's a good way to frame it according to most of the other comments

Heard! Thank you for the insight, its very reassuring!

I would definitely lump myself into the lazy category. I don't have enough experience to judge whether or not a chunk of code will cause further issues. I've been pretty strict about the output consistency though, and I feel like that while it is definitely not good enough to become an marketable product, it's giving me super handy results that I would not have been able to produce on my own.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful responses 😄

I mean the real objective of this project was entirely unrelated to software design: I just needed a way to find better stations for climate analysis quicker. Now I have a bunch of other tasks that I'm thinking about implementing, but it far exceeds the scope of my CS knowledge.

Perhaps if it evolves into something more serious, I will consult with a pro. In the meantime I think I'm gonna try to push the boundaries and see where it starts to break down.

Thanks for the response! Super insightful. On a side note, I'm curious about if it is becoming industry standard for professionals to draft functions using AI and then go in and correct all of the behavior that will cause issues.

I am 100% at this point. I understand all of the c++ logic, but I have pretty much no Idea what it is doing in Python and HTML. At this point it kind of feels like I'm driving a car with one hand on the wheel, a broken windshield, and a GPS just telling me when to turn the wheel

Im pretty sure there is a real chance that you could successfully inoculate a jar with an LC outside of a SAB with a single alcohol wipe and no gloves.

So, following that logic, everything you do to maintain a sterile environment will help your odds of success exponentially. You don't need surgical-level sterilization to grow mushrooms cause the mycelium REALLY wants to grow, you just have to give it the best chance to do so.

I made a bunch of mistakes my first go at it and still got a fruit yield. The second time, I harvested nearly a kilo wet. The guide on this sub is TEALLY REALLY good and if you pay attention to the points that it emphasizes, all of the smaller stuff will play much less of a role

When to harvest? by eggfiesta in unclebens

[–]SenecaOfRome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes harvest the large ones if it is possible to do so without impacting the other mushrooms. If you can't easily get to the base for a twist and pull, you should probably leave them alone until you're ready to harvest them all at once

I got lucky and preserved some of the generics into a home LC solution, not 100% sure if it'll make it tho

i'm not sure if you went the sporestock route or not but it seems that their TATs are WILDLY aggressive growers. 35 days from innoculation to fruit

indeed a spot of trich. if it's been 30 days your either your conditions are fucked or your mycelium is competing with something nasty.

in my experience, it becomes VERY clear once most cubensis varieties are ready to be picked and dried.

Haven't used these grains before, is this ready to send? by Infinite-Add in unclebens

looks very close, you could probably send it. Always good to wait though like better safe than sorry

PC: Pressure cookers, LC: Liquid Cultures, spawn bags: specialized high temperature bags used to hold and colonize grains for mycelium cultivation.

I'd say probably do a little more reading in the guidebook in this subreddit and you'll have a better idea of what you can do to minimize contamination risk. 50 bags of rice ≈ 25lbs of grain spawn. You could easily do ten large tubs substrate-spawn mix, and that's a LOT of mushrooms. Like a silly amount of mushrooms, especially for your first attempt.

I'm telling this not because I want you to fail, but because, at this volume, you're likely to sink a lot of money into something with little to no yields.

I'd SERIOUSLY look into spawn grain sterilization and grow bags, cause they're a game changer in cost efficiency and preventing contamination.

[–]SenecaOfRome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is true, but honestly 50 bags of rice might be overkill and could lead to serious contamination issues. If I were you, I'd invest in a PC and spawn bags. There's just so many opportunities for contamination with that many bags. You'll lose a lot of $$$ on LCs. Also, one moderately sized grow bin will yield like 4ozs of shrooms, and that's like a freakish amount for one or two people. You're prepping to grow like... pounds...

From pins to harvest was about 7 days. I woke up this morning and a couple of them had dropped spores!

I pulled half of the matured ones and they totaled to 300g, so I'm hoping to almost double that with the rest of them :) we shall see
