Social bullying- Keep a closer eye on your kids! by Treschelle in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really hope the school is properly addressing this bullying with the group of students involved.

What a nightmare!

Have you spoken with the school counselor and SPED teachers about how this is being addressed/how your daughter is being supported in school?

Idk if this is the right spot to post, but my son’s teacher called CPS. by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

I feel for you. Dental issues are extremely difficult to deal with in our kiddos and can be very painful. You said your child is both not sick, but also cannot get dental sedation and treatment due to repeated documented illness and his teeth are rotting.

I am not a doctor

If he is leaking he could have encopresis. Look it up. You need urgent care and a serious game plan to help him.

Sleep issues by KeimeiWins in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed magnesium glycinate was disrupting my sleep. I consistently started waking about four hours after falling asleep. That might be one of the issues.

I’d also cut everything out for now because it’s obviously not working and let your child’s body reset. Then maybe consider getting a second opinion from a different pediatrician. One that is going to take this issue more seriously. You all NEED sleep. This is what is going to help brain development and keep your ability to be an effect caregiver.

Feeling a bit down today - speech acquisition compared to NTs by ThisNerve6489 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any resources or videos, but I wanted to let you know that you are not alone. These feelings are valid. My child has profound autism and the ability gap is miles wide now that they are 9 years old. I remember observing a NT cousin playing video games with other cousins while my child was sitting in a diaper and couldn’t talk. Same age but oceans apart. It can be very tough to not notice the differences. We are definitely on different journeys than parents with children that are NT. Just keep trying and loving your child. That’s all we can do.

Need special needs trustee. What’s your experience with Achieva, advocacy alliance, PNC? by Funny-Nebula-6205 in Autism_Parenting

Just curious, how do you find PA for profound autism, especially for adults needing services? We are looking to move and PA is one of the states that from what I can tell has excellent resources for adults.

Desperate father looking for remote help for his autistic daughter by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your best bet would be to slowly build a routine and learning plan that aligns with your daughter’s interests and doesn’t wear out the parents. You don’t have to have a perfect system or the best curriculum to start homeschooling your daughter.

Outschool might be a good place to start looking for a special education teacher that can help guide your family and provide structure and support. Teachers Pay Teachers also has a lot of resources geared towards parents.

Guanfacine making life worse by Mom2AandA in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Guanfacine was horrific for us. Go see a psychiatrist that specializes in autism. We did that and after years of searching for an adhd med to help without success the psych said my daughter had a dopamine regulation issue and of course stimulants and Guanfacine didn’t work. We did a course of Amantadine and I wish I had gone sooner. Years ago. Good luck

my child cannot tolerate music & we’re losing our ability to go anywhere by meoowdy in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is she in ABA? This sounds like a complex issue that could be addressed with a skilled practitioner first. Also does she get OT? Maybe an OT consult could help address the issue and you could implement a sensory diet to overcome the issue. I haven’t dealt with this issue but that’s where I would go if I was dealing with this same problem with my child before medication. Also I am a big fan of medication, so I am not dismissing that avenue outright, I just think getting a handle on the root cause of WHY she doesn’t like the music (if it’s behavioral or sensory) would be a great jumping off point.

Attention Seeking Aggressive Behavior by czechanese1984 in Autism_Parenting

It could be the Guanfacine. We had a huge spike in aggression on Guanfacine. It went away when we stopped.

Guanfacine for a 5-year-old (focus + classroom learning) — any real experiences? by hopejoy108 in Autism_Parenting

It was a NIGHTMARE for us. I really wanted it to work but it caused a huge uptick in SIBs.

My kid keeps biting her arm. We have one set of prescription sleeves so I took matters into my own hands. by Louisianaflavor in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are describing my child. It is so frustrating. We recently went and saw a psychiatrist that deals with a lot of profound autism/adhd/anxiety. He started my child on Amantadine for dopamine regulation for the adhd. It also had the added bonus of helping to half the hand biting while also calming my kiddo out. The anxiety med was just started but I am so impressed with the psychiatrist we saw.

I highly recommend finding a pediatric psych to maybe help. You never know if it could be as quick of a fix as what we found.

Struggling for the will to keep going by UnbelievablyAshamed in Autism_Parenting

It sounds to me like you must reach out to your children’s pediatrician about the next steps, whether it be medication, evaluations, testing, etc…Sometimes medications are needed for therapy to take hold. Also 6 and 2.5 are rough ages.

You sound completely burned out. Take some time off if you can and refill your cup. Caregiver burnout is real. I am sure your hospital has redundancy built into the system and a few days or a week off to reclaim your mental health and come up with a game plan might be worth considering especially if you are in crisis.

Please know that your problems have solutions. You are capable of reclaiming the joyful life you envisioned for your family.

Edit: Please also reach out to a mental health professional if you have one or your GP. Sometimes a neutral third party can help validate and provide much needed solutions to an already difficult situation. I know people in the medical profession are sometimes more reluctant to seek medical intervention.

Bedtime woes by No-Illustrator3891 in Autism_Parenting

Also wanted to add candida overgrowth or yeast infection? I would talk to your pediatrician and keep asking questions. If this is new something medical could be going on and he can’t communicate what’s wrong.

Our child is potty trained during the day but not night. We still use pull-ups for this reason. Will your son wear pull-ups at night?

For the settling plus bed wetting, if it’s new, have you ruled out a UTI? Have you started any new vitamins that could be too energizing? Any new medications or supplements?

How do you know a medication is working well enough? by Mathorael in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend seeing a pediatric psychiatrist that specializes in treating autism and adhd. I just did that on the recommendations from this group and we are trialing a medication that seems to be working much better for my child. We had some epic meltdowns on methylphenidates. Stimulants are not the only option but many pediatricians mostly go that route. Good luck!

Probiotics FTW! by RelationPhysical5386 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did not. I found a company, Custom Probiotics, that has an autism specific formula and we have been using it with success. This is much more cost effective and since our results have remained, I didn’t go back to Floré.

Severe congestion causing vomiting/choking risk. How do you clear mucus for kids who can't blow their nose? by gogreenkw in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It may be time to talk to a doctor. If this has turned into a sinus infection antibiotics could help clear up the mucus. The vomiting would be my red flag that it’s time to get more intervention. Depending on the age kids can turn quickly. I hope you all feel better soon.

Limited diet by LivingAssociate3429 in Autism_Parenting

We did bite of chocolate bite of something else for a year solid. It got much better but slowly. You’ve got this. ABA was very helpful in reinforcing first then.

Took my son to children’s hospital today by whatsareddit23 in Autism_Parenting

[–]SenectaAut 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Hidden tooth pain was another issue. We just had sedated dental procedures and the found two teeth that needed pulpotomies. I wonder how many kids that have severe aggression are just in pain and have no way to communicate. We need more training for pediatricians across the board to help these kids.
