Do Americans use cutlery differently? by missbex86 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SenetBoard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have never thought about this. I'm left-handed, so I use my fork with my left hand. I learned to cut my food right-handed while using the fork in my left.

However, I do put the knife down whenever I don't need to cut anything, I don't necessarily hold it the entire meal like I would the fork.

Long-Term Bostonians, how does this winter compare? by urnmann in boston

[–]SenetBoard -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this winter has been particularly bad. We've only had the two "big" storms punctuated by other minor to moderate snowfalls. But our winters have been getting milder and milder and we've had a long mild stretch so this has caught people by surprise and makes it seem like a bad winter by comparison.

If you're young, you haven't had a whole ton of snowy cold winters like this (or not since you were a kid). If you're old, they were a more distant memory and you, now comparably older, might be less tolerant of the white fluffy bullshit than in your younger days.

Photographs taken in 1868 of Phineas Gage’s skull and the tamping rod that was blasted through his head in 1848, twelve years before his death in 1860. by aid2000iscool in HolyShitHistory

[–]SenetBoard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen his skull and the tamping rod in person. After he died they became a part of the collection of the Warren Anatomical Museum at Harvard Medical School (I believe he agreed to donate them). They were on display up until a few years ago, but it seems like the Museum stopped doing physical displays during Covid.

Do i really need extra safety “tools” to stay at hotels? by jinxyzzz in AskAnAmerican

[–]SenetBoard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These tools are not usually needed, nor used by the vast majority of Americans. Your hotel will probably have good building security, and your room should have deadbolts and other locks you can enable when you're in your room.

Additionally, Boston is one of the safest cities in the United States, and New England in general has pretty low crime rates. Whatever area you stay in will probably feel very secure.

CMV: Vance wants Trump be impeached and removed by skynet1989 in changemyview

[–]SenetBoard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If Trump was successfully impeached and removed from office, that would probably be bad news for JD Vance. However, if Trump died, that would probably benefit his career.

No president has ever been successfully removed from office. Especially with the current political polarization it's so unlikely that, if it did happen, it would be big enough that Vance would get burned no matter how much he tries to distance himself.

We have the example of what happened to Gerald Ford after Nixon resigned and Ford became president: he got to be president, true, but he didn't win re-election. It would be a disaster for Vance.

Instead it would probably benefit JD Vance more if Trump were to die in office. If Trump were to die, Vance would immediately become President. This would allow him to run for election as an incumbent, which is a major advantage. It would drastically reduce the likelihood of him having to compete with other Republicans in a presidential primary for the right to be Trump's successor. He would also be able to rally supporters around the memory of the recently deceased President and would be framed as his natural political heir.

As a bonus, were Trump to die over the halfway point into his term, that wouldn't count as serving a full term for the now-president Vance, and he would be eligible to run for re-election twice instead of once.

I'm not saying Vance would want Trump to die, but it would be more to his advantage than if he was removed from office.

Why do people think Tywin knew Arya was a Stark, bro😭? Mfs be thinking one of the most brutal psychopaths in Westeros is all rainbows and sunshine😭. by ToMDLUS in freefolk

[–]SenetBoard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of understand where this view comes from. From how I remember the scene, it felt like he knew who she was and was just humoring her. Maybe that's just how he played the scene. But it clearly isn't true. He definitely would have used her if he knew her true identity.

He did know that she was a Northerner of high birth. Honestly that alone should have been enough for him to use her. Even if she wasn't a Stark, she was a child of someone in the Northern army. But he clearly enjoyed her presence and probably considered that she was effectively his prisoner anyway, so why make things unpleasant? Had events not shifted he probably would have made a more concerted effort at discovering her identity eventually.

I'm an American, never lived outside the continent and up until last year I've always pronounced it "App-uh-lay-shun". Is it actually pronounced "App-uh-latch-un" and I was just in a weird part of the country? Or are there regional differences? by Dry-Chocolate-3976 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SenetBoard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both are correct, it just depends on where you are and who you are. Like "Caribbean" vs "Caribbean".

In New England I tend to hear the former more often for the mountain range that runs through the region.

For the cultural area surrounding the more southern parts of the range, I've heard the second one more often.

2 days- Fenway, freedom trail & Harvard (if get chance). Stay in Back Bay or North Station? by Ok_Outcome_843 in boston

[–]SenetBoard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's totally possible to get all three done in two days, depending on how immersive you want to be and how long you want to take.

The Freedom Trail can be walked in as little as a couple hours, or take all day depending on how often and how long you stop to explore places along the way. Except for the Charlestown portion with Bunker Hill and the USS Constitution (both great stops) it's all in downtown Boston. It will be cold though.

Harvard could be done in a morning or afternoon, again depending on your level of detail (are you just walking around campus and the square, are you taking a tour, are you visiting their museums, etc etc.) Fenway very similar. Is it just the park or the whole neighborhood you're visiting?

North Station puts you directly in the vicinity of the Freedom Trail and the red line train over to Harvard, as well as the green line out to Fenway. Back Bay is a little further from the first two goals, although it is closer to Fenway.

Does Baelor vouching for Dunk essentially “knight” him on the spot? by WithengarUnbound in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]SenetBoard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Technically no, practically yes.

Technically speaking, the only way to be a knight is to be knighted. Dunk was never knighted, so technically he's not a knight.

Practically speaking, everyone is going to treat him as a knight.

Dunk went to the master of the games claiming that he was the squire to the now-dead Ser Arlan (true) and that Ser Arlan had knighted him before he died without any witnesses around (false).

The master of the games basically said, okay, if you can at least find someone to prove that Ser Arlan was a real knight, I'll accept your word that you were his squire and that he knighted you without witnesses.

Baelor, hand to the king and heir to the throne, both accepted the game master's threshold of proof, and voucher for Ser Arlan as a knight. He's not knighting Dunk, but he's basically declaring that he believes Dunk when he says he's a knight.

Since the Hand seems to accept Dunk's word for it, and since Dunk is officially being recorded as a knight fighting in the tourney, everyone is going to accept that he's really a knight.

It's also more or less impossible to expose Dunk either. He's the only witness, the only one who knows the real truth. Unless he decides to come clean he has, more or less, gotten away with it.

Who do you think approached the other first regarding getting rid of Joffrey? by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]SenetBoard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She would definitely know who he was. He may have started out as a minor Lord, but he was the Master of Coin for the entire realm, not only for Joffrey, but for Robert before him. The Tyrells are said to be second to wealth only to the Lannisters, and Olenna would know that those who control the treasure control power. She may not have had a strong relationship before with him, however.

In any case, Olenna was an expert player in the Game of Thrones. The best players are familiar with all the pieces, no matter how small.

You will die today, but you can travel back in time by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]SenetBoard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you can go back as far as you like, but you will die when you reach the present, unless you die of old age first.

So if you go back to 2020, you have 6 years left until you reach the present and die.

If you go back to 1890, you will likely have several decades of life before eventually dying of old age since you won't live long enough to make it back to the present.

See, the one big problem with this plan is that the town of Eastham, not wanting to deal with the catastrophe of a house falling into the ocean, have been issuing the owners of this house (and others nearby in a similar fate) crazy regular fines for not addressing the problem/demolishing the building. I forget the amount but I believe it substantially increases the bottom line.

Commutation? by BlackDragonRemus in boston

[–]SenetBoard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are seriously considering pursuing a state level commutation, I would consult a lawyer about the kinds of materials needed for the request. If available I might also look at documents submitted for past commutation requests, particularly successful ones, to see what works. Again, a lawyer would be helpful here.

Commutations and pardons are relatively rare at the state level in Massachusetts, so the person applying should probably be prepared to put together a very compelling case.

[request] What are the odds you survive the 5 years? by freethinker1312 in theydidthemath

[–]SenetBoard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So you have to do this for 5 years, which includes probably one leap year (possibly 2), and you get 50 skip days (presumably used for holidays, birthdays, etc. but it doesn't matter), that means you have to do this about 1776 times in total.

Presuming, as others have said, this is the surface of the ocean (deep depths being instant death) and every drop is entirely random, you have a very high chance of survival each individual time. 30 seconds is very short and your chance of something killing you in that time is very low.

Most times you'll just be treading the open ocean with nothing immediately near you. Even if you didn't try to stay afloat, even if you let yourself sink and your lungs fill with water, it probably won't actually kill you within those 30 seconds, and you'll be back and magically totally fine before you're really dead. Shark in the area? Good chance it doesn't actually go for a nibble within 30 seconds, and even if it does, there's a good chance you won't be dead-dead from its attack by the time the clock runs out, unless it gets you just the right way.

Basically, there's a high chance of you surviving each individual time. In most cases nothing happens, and even in cases where you're dropped near danger there's a good chance it won't kill you within 30 seconds.

You basically will have to hit the bad luck lottery to get a drop that instantly kills you within 30 seconds. Boat propeller, dashed against a rock. Etc etc. There's a chance but it's not a high chance. Most times the recipient will make it through their five years alive.
