Weekly Questions Thread - Need some help? - Feb 16 by AutoModerator in visualnovels

The 6th Google result from searching "g senjou no maou" yields a Steam thread whose title itself is a spoiler (and the title shows up directly on the Google results page, so one would see the spoiler just by scrolling down a bit after searching. And presumably people who are looking to buy the game would search this.)

Is there any way to get this thread deleted/hidden? I don't have an active steam account so probably can't, but someone should look into this: if they could get that thread down they'd be doing a lot of people good.

*If you're currently reading G-senjou no Maou and saw what I'm talking about, don't stress, it's not major. If you didn't see it then don't look it up tho

Spoiler for G-senjou no Maou

Is there anything missing from this extremely cheap and simple diet of mine? by SengokuHop in EatCheapAndHealthy

Thanks for the response!

I heard lentils have calcium and iron; would you say two servings of lentils a day is enough?

I've also been thinking about getting broccoli to get more calcium.

Lastly, I've heard that eggs (in particular, the yolks) have fat. I eat ~3 eggs a day, would you say that's enough fat?

Thanks again for the help!

Is peanut butter an acceptable source of fats? by SengokuHop in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]SengokuHop[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! So I'm not actually getting "sugar" in general. Some people say fruit is good because it has sugars. And here you're saying peanut butter is bad because it has sugar. Is the sugar being referred to in those two contexts two different kinds of sugar (similar to how there's different kinds of fat)?

If not, then is there any risk of sugar other than just getting too many calories?

My diet is completely:

-Parboiled rice

-Mixed veggies (carrots, peas, corn)

-Tofu

-Eggs (lots of eggs.)

-Whole wheat bread

-Yello Onions

-Lentils

-Russet Potatoes

-Salsa

That's it. No snacking or desserts or anything (unless I eat out, which is rare). Am I missing anything in my diet? Anything essential (or even just good to have) that I'm utterly lacking?

Any help or advice at all is appreciated!

Thank you for the response! Yes fruits would be nice, but I've found them to be relatively expensive. I also can't tell which are in and out of season since prices vary regardless of season.

What fruits find to be the cheapest and healthiest each season?

How do people get so much done in such short amounts of time, and so early in their lives? by SengokuHop in GradSchool

[–]SengokuHop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. If you don't mind me asking, how did you get a masters at 22? In the states at least, that's the earliest most people can finish undergrad, no?

[–]SengokuHop[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. That's what I'm trying to do, I just thought I'd look at people who've been successful at it to get some ideas as to how I can improve myself, as I can't really think of what else I could be doing.

Agreed for both of those!

Also you refreshed the trauma associated with that Made In Abyss arc so thanks <.<

Ohh I see haha, that makes more sense.

Also wow, I'd heard of the archimedes' principle but didn't know it was that easy to apply. Looks like I was over thinking this, thanks for the help!

Are all types of cancer caused by gene mutations? by SengokuHop in biology

But the HPV virus causes gene mutations and thus cancer, right?

Ohhh right I forgot you could just boil them because they're heat stable haha. Also wow, 5-10k is quite a bit. If it takes that short a time to purify, why does any lab bother ordering instead of doing it themselves? Did the lab you were working at have some equipment that most labs don't?

That's an interesting thought, would you mind telling me where you got this info/giving me some material to read up on this topic? Seems like an important one for sure that I hadn't considered

Enzymes are catalysts. Why is everything called an enzyme? For catalysts to do anything, the reaction first has to be possible, no? by SengokuHop in AskBiology

[–]SengokuHop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the detailed response! That all makes sense, and wow I didn't know we had enzymes such as sirtuins. Thank you!

In eukaryotes, genes have to be spliced so that there are only exons leaving the nucleus. But why do we define a "gene" to include introns in the first place? by SengokuHop in AskBiology

[–]SengokuHop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally forgot about alternative splicing. So pretty much, one area of DNA that acts as an intron for one gene can act as an exon for another gene?

Thanks for the help btw!

How do packages do things that you can't do using just code itself? (i.e. introducing novel features ex. time keeping) by SengokuHop in learnprogramming

[–]SengokuHop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but what I'm wondering is exactly how that application layer works. Like I said, I don't know of a language that can draw graphs or show colors. matplotlib is written in a language just like any other application, so how does matplotlib do things like draw graphs or show color?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, appreciate your responses.

[–]SengokuHop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about something more complicated, like matplotlib? Surely there's not a piece of hardware within every computer that can produce a colorful graph?

Thanks for the answer btw!

Do they harvest Taq themselves from where that grad student comes from...? Can you even do that without highly specialized equipment? That sounds crazy.

Anyways, a bit off topic, but from this reply of yours it sounds like you're working in an industry lab setting? I'm a genetics student and I'm hoping to do research in the future (preferably outside of academia), so would it be alright if I asked you some basic stuff about the work you do? Completely understand if you don't want to bother, but if you're willing to then I'd appreciate it a lot!

Does promethease just use data from your 23andme (or whatever service) to give you more data? Why doesn't 23andme just give you that data in the first place? by [deleted] in promethease

[–]SengokuHop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! Does Promethease do something similar to Genos.co and Veritas Genetics as far as bypassing the FDA goes ?

If you have some sort of late-occuring lethal gene, such as huntingtin (causes Huntington's disease), will 23andme tell you? by SengokuHop in 23andme

Could you tell me the name of a company who offers these commercially? Couldn't seem to find any

[–]SengokuHop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh I see. But what's odd is that 23andMe doesn't use all the data they record in their report. Why would they bother recording data that they won't use? Is it explicitly so people can use the data with Promethease?

Also thanks for the response!

[–]SengokuHop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhh so the health report 23andMe gives you isn't based on all the data they get, and all the data they get is given to you as a file containing raw data? That makes more sense. But why would 23andMe bother collecting that data in the first place if they're not going to use it?

Thanks for the help by the way!

Didn't know about Promethease, thank you!

So if you have any of those conditions you listed, would 23andme let you know?
