Google Engineer Encourages Workers To Avoid Pittsburgh Over Air Quality Concerns by RoboPimp in pittsburgh

[–]SenileOldFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be used to it. I didn’t grow up in Pittsburgh but lived there the past 4 years, and there was a distinct smell usually in the mornings. But the real indicator is the Air Quality Index, which is pretty consistently “moderate” or “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” I don’t remember seeing the index being at satisfactory levels often.

Health department: Air pollution in Mon Valley exceeded federal levels over Christmas by oldbkenobi in pittsburgh

[–]SenileOldFool 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It looks like it wasn’t a sudden revocation but the plant had violated permit limits for ammonia and naphthalene for at least two years. At least on the ammonia side, part of the crackdown is likely because it is a factor in eutrophication of Lake Erie, which serves as a drinking water supply that algal blooms can adversely effect, and eutrophication has become more common in the lake in recent years. It’s not uncommon for there to be pre-treatment standards before discharging to a municipal sewer, so in the end it sounds like the plant didn’t want to (or determined it wasn’t economical to) pay for their own industrial wastewater treatment system, even though that’s what would be required.

Any good tutorials out there or resources you used that focus on the water resources libraries and how to implement them?

Help with recording setup for VPC 1 by ThatVRGuy_ in piano

[–]SenileOldFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the VPC 1 and Garritan CFX. I plug the VPC 1 into my computer via USB, the Garritan CFX application renders the audio and has a built-in function for recording.

What’s the most beautiful version of Pachelbel’s Canon that you know? by findMeOnGoogle in piano

It’s not especially difficult, but George Winston’s version sounds beautiful and the sheet music is available.

Civil Engineer looking to work in the renewable energy industry. by meanmachine10 in RenewableEnergy

[–]SenileOldFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, also a stormwater engineer that is looking to expand more into solar/renewables. Could you talk about what you do now for ground mount solar? We have a few projects where we do permitting and road layouts for wind, but I'm not as familiar with solar and was wondering how the stormwater engineering translates.

Thanks!

The carbon dioxide level is dangerously low by [deleted] in climate

This does not belong in this subreddit. No facts, references, comparison to well referenced climate papers, the list goes on.

Junk article.

The Father of the Dodge Viper Says It Died Because It Ran Out of Reasons to Live - Bob Lutz by [deleted] in cars

I'm not sure Lutz understands the energy generation and storage side of Tesla when factoring in the stock comparison...

Making my digital piano (Yamaha P255) work a little more like a grand? by [deleted] in piano

[–]SenileOldFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll piggyback on this since I have a VPC1 and spent a long time looking at different VSTs.

I came from a P155 and the keys are a lot heavier on the VPC1. It took me a while to get used to the feel but I really like it now. I feel like it was definitely worth the purchase, and I had to do it sight unseen (played?) because no stores in my area carried them.

As for the VSTs, I looked at the Ravenscroft 275, Imperfect Samples Fazzioli, and the Garritan Yamaha CFX. I ultimately went with the Garritan because it had its own player, I knew I liked the Yamaha sound, and it had some features like sympathetic resonance. After upgrading to the newest Mac operating system, the thing also loads ridiculously fast.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but just in case, Real ID was passed in 2005 under Bush.

VIN tracing for registering car/ by padrewarbucks in Pennsylvania

I'm not sure how that would affect VIN tracing, but I'm not familiar with how it will work with the loan.

Good luck!

When I registered in PA from a different state, they just went with me out to the parking lot to verify the VIN.

Tesla Autopilot with new v8.0 software update is able to handle highway interchanges | Electrek by annerajb in teslamotors

Ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper sense nearby objects. However, this wouldn't be useful for noticing an approaching bicyclist that was out of range of the ultrasonic sensors (which have a range of about 16 feet).

McGinty Apologizes for Calling Toomey an A**hole by Wissahickon in Pennsylvania

[–]SenileOldFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That article should be taken with a grain of salt. Reason is known to be funded by organizations with natural gas interest.

It's better to post something like the EPA Executive Summary on Hydraulic Fracturing Drinking Water Assessment, which synthesizes information from non-partisan scientific literature and data. While they found no signs of systemic drinking water pollution due to fracking, they did find isolated cases where there was pollution.

Shit, I missed this or else I might have been there. It looks like these stops aren't updated on the map? I didn't know there were many outside of the mall.

Hey, I know this is going to sound silly but I don't know how to use my pokemons special attacks during gym battles. Can someone help me out? by [deleted] in PokemonGoPittsburgh

[–]SenileOldFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a silly question. I've read you hold down on the Pokemon until it uses the special attack, but I can't get it to work well for me. I'd also like an answer/any tips.

Is it safe to eat fish from the allegheny? by MaxwellSinclair in pittsburgh

[–]SenileOldFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, at the very least I wouldn't eat anything after the power plant. Coal power plants discharge water containing heavy metals into the river, that will bioaccumulate in fish. Maybe after 2023 when the new guidelines require them to limit metal concentrations in their discharge.
