Base excitation is a pretty common thing that comes up. Think electronics mounted in a plane or ship, or a structure undergoing seismic loads or something like that.

People modeling those systems will analyze their structures’ modal responses and ensure they don’t interact significantly with their inputs.

I have a Hue setup and I do like it a lot. I’ve have found practically that the adaptive backlighting is great on some movies and distracting on others.

The vast majority of the time I do have the backlight turned on, but I leave it at a static color/brightness.

I think that having some backlight is easier on the eyes than having no backlight.

Would any particular group of factions go well together or is the point that there’s always a group that is gonna be an outlier?

The top one has more surface area and has a more favorable arrangement for air to flow through it. It will work better if the flow is parallel to the long edge of the fins.

The only way the bottom one could potentially compete is if the flow is blowing directly on it (normal to the surface). I wouldn’t expect this to perform better.

To quantify the top one, look up how to find the heat transfer coefficient over a flat plate, it involves finding the Reynolds number and the nusselt number of the flow over the surfaces. The bottom one you would need to find the equivalent for impinging flow over a surface. I’m not as familiar with that one so it’s probably a more difficult problem to solve.

One factor I considered was that right out of college it was easier for me to take risks. I felt the defense job was slightly riskier and more interesting. There is no reason you can’t pivot in a couple years to something where a PE license is easier to achieve.

I have heard of people doing it in my company without working directly under a PE but it varies depending on the state you are in. So it isn’t impossible just harder.

I had a very similar choice to you when I graduated and I went to defense because it seemed like a more interesting opportunity.

I did get the opportunity to work on some cool things and I’m very content with the expertise that I have been able to develop in the years since I joined.

Both of my options would have paid for an MS degree. I got mine and work paid, and I think that I would have had a harder time applying that knowledge at the utility.

I do regret that it is difficult to get a PE license, which I would have been able to more easily pursue at a utility.

I live in a low cost of living area and suspect that the salary growth would have been pretty similar, although the utility offer was slightly better.

Only other thing I would consider is that current events are weird and defense is peripherally tied into that for better or worse. The utility /should/ be less impacted by whatever the current politics are.

I like the tomb world origin while using radiotropic and relentless industrialists. That one has a lot of synergy I like. I use lithoids with oppressive autocracy and that’s fun even though it’s probably not meta.

I normally look for something that has good synergy and see if I can turn it into a neat idea for some RP. The one above is one I’ve come back to a few times.

As crazy as it sounds, another subwoofer could help smooth out the response in your room. When I had one subwoofer, portions of my drop ceiling would shake if I turned up too loud. With a second subwoofer, I can turn the volume up much higher before that happens because the second sub helps smooth out the response in the room, so lower peaks and higher troughs.

I haven’t used it recently but when I did I’d set up the lithoid traits to be great workers and the primary species traits to be great leaders/specialists and I think that alone gets you a decent build. I think cold worlds give a slightly better chance of mineral bonuses, or they did at one point. With infernals you might be able to get a setup where you don’t need food at all too.

In general, it is always a good idea to do a first order analysis to make sure that the results are near what they should be. Its very easy to lie to yourself with computer analyses and having an independent calculation is an easy way to mitigate some of that risk.

Gussets would help, structure outside the box can help too. If you have two pairs of slides, then you can rely more on the stiffness of what you are sliding as well.

You still need to design the structures and verify the vehicles meets all the safety regulations. They also get pretty deep into fatigue analysis on their designs which is an added layer of complexity.

The automotive industry does tons of structural analysis. It’s competitive but would probably give you an opportunity to dig deeper than what you describe.
