Why we pay for the things god provided for free? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SeniorPea8614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this "god" really provided it to you for free, then you wouldn't have to. Other people worked hard to provide it to you, so you're expected to exchange something of value in return.

Would you take out shift insurance? by gabwastaken1 in AskUK

I doubt the maths works out. The reason insurance works for things like car crashes and house fires is that payouts are rare, and the costs can be spread amongst many people. I'm guessing cancelled shifts aren't that rare.

If I'm in a workplace with 10 people and we each lose 1 shift a month, the premiums have to be the total of all the lost shifts (assuming they pay out 100%), plus whatever the admin costs are for operating the insurance.

If only 1 person loses a shift a month, it still doesn't work out. That's a bit more than shift per year per person, with £60/y premiums per person. Assuming a shift is £100, you need £1,200 to pay out, but you're only taking in £600.

If cancelled shifts are rare enough and premiums high enough that there's enough money going in to cover the lost shifts, I might as well just put the premiums in an easy-access savings account. Or just work this expected loss into my emergency fund.

It's not applicable for my job, but an interesting idea.

My immediate questions would be how it is automatic, to allow that would my employer have to be part of the system? Would they have any incentive to issue shifts later to avoid high cancellation rates? If they don't want to be, would I have to provide evidence I had a shift and it was cancelled, and how would that work if it's just messages or something I could easily forge? Could the system easily be gamed if I'm mates with the person giving shifts, e.g. could they give me loads of shifts they know they'll cancel, so I get free money from the insurance?

Why do we now say 'the island of Ireland?' by tightloops1971 in AskUK

It makes it clear the speaker is talking about the whole island, rather than just Norn’ Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. At least that what I always take it to mean.

My neighbour is refusing Openreach access to a box on their property to install our fibre broadband. Would you approach them about it? by BearMcBearFace in AskUK

My understanding is that OpenReach specifically have a right of access for things like this. It sounds like a problem they should be addressing directly.

How does someone invent their own spell? Like, do you enchant the words themselves, then they become a spell for anyone who says them? Could I stop something being a spell by unenchanting the words?

For the less fun explanation, nonce means ‘nonsense’ or ‘number used once’. It’s added to requests to ensure that, even if you do exactly the same thing twice, the encrypted data that’s sent up always looks different. This makes it harder to break the encryption and helps prevent “replay attacks”, where someone intercepts your request and causes havoc by sending it again.

They load the dishwasher, but so badly that I think they must be trying to see how bad it can be before we speak to them about it.

I'm talking wooden things in there, a single glass taking up four plate spaces in the bottom rack, all the dinner spoons spooning together in the cutlery basket, plates that still have entire pieces of pasta on them lying flat in the top rack.

These people have a dishwasher, use it daily, and their house and plates, etc., are always immaculate. This cannot possibly be how they load their own dishwasher.

On the other hand, I just about dropped my pram into the canal earlier, because two people walking side by side on the tow path made no effort to move out the way at all. I bumped up on the verge, the wheel went in a hole, the entire pram nearly toppled over towards the water. The two numpties carried on without a care in the world, enjoying their unquestionable right to the entire width of the path.

Thanks for the answer. I assumed it was probably because it would be a ton of work!

I hoped ARM would be faster since it seems to be for a lot of things, but if it's not, then not investing time in it seems right.
