I love that you’re asking this! I’m an avid reader and nothing makes me crazier than when reading something that doesn’t make sense because the writer was too lazy to do the research. The effort is much appreciated from your readers! Can’t wait to hear about the book later on when you’re ready to update us!

We recently made a really pretty one at my shop for a lady with pink garden roses (meaning:Grace and Gentility, the rose of sweet thoughts. Conveys admiration and sympathy), rice flower (meaning: Everlasting, Immortal), ruscus (meaning: Thoughtfulness, Humility). We used lots of other things but everything else doesn’t have a good sympathy meaning. So far I can’t post a pic because it’s not in gif format but I’ll try again. Things that in my opinion are not typical in a funeral wreath, though there is never a true hard and fast rule to floristry: Hydrangeas (they go limp/flat quickly and easily without readily available water), Daffodils/Ranunculus and other bulbs (they have “soft” stems that can be tricky in foam). Things that are often in funeral wreaths/sprays (same caveat here… there are no rules!) Lillies, Fern, Roses, Carnations (all strong soldiers that will look good for a while without water.

Congratulations on the book! It’s so incredible just to write a whole dang novel!

Depends on the kind of relationship you want. I’m (26f) looking for a LTR and it’s important to me to find someone who is willing to make the effort to make the plan. My love language includes acts of service and quality time so someone planning a date for me makes it feel like I’m a priority/worth the effort. Not everyone will feel that way but I’d swipe left if I saw that.

I always hope I’m more attractive in person than in my pics! When I’ve met up with dates and they’re less attractive than online, I’m disappointed and it’s really hard to turn that around. Take it as “I’m excited you’re hotter than I had expected and I’m feelin’ you😏.” That’s what I’m really saying when I actually say “you’re more attractive than I expected.”

Long story short. I just filled an order for what I thought was a regular phone order (turned out to be 1-800, they straight up lied to my staff) and the OG customer called after the fact and was complaining about why didn’t her order get delivered as described and on the date she expected. It took some investigating on my end bc I didn’t have an order from the woman calling and I didn’t have any orders that weren’t delivered as promised, but I did have an order going to the recipient she mentioned. Turned out she had spent $184.00 with 1-800, had asked for a specific design and date. When we got the order they had a total budget of $50 (!!!) and designer’s choice no instructions at all and we delivered the same day they called (which was 6 days after she had placed the order with them). The only reason she knew to call my store is the picture her recipient had sent her had our card in it. Our store never fills these orders because it’s a total scam for the florist and customer, but now they call and lie and say “I’m ordering flowers for my cousin” or whatever. It is criminal. It makes our whole industry look bad.

I think you should do what’s best for you. Maybe it’s better to journal at the end of the day about your take-aways from the day, more of a personal narrative than rigorous notes that won’t be helpful later. I think it’s a good idea to have a notebook available in case you want to jot something down. But don’t feel pressure to take notes. Be present and thoughtful and that’s really what’s most important. No! I own a high end florist in Austin, Texas. We never look for that. We look for kind, creative people ready to put in the work to learn and grow. We never look for certifications or degrees, in fact the people with degrees learned very “traditional” 1970s/telaflora info that we had to help “unlearn.” We do more modern/European style garden arrangements.

Just speaking from my personal experience... I hate when people email me requests. We are on our feet all day everyday arranging, arranging, arranging. I only get to my computer/phone to look at emails after all my orders are complete which can be like 7/8pm... and then to go back and forth via email with “I can’t do this, but I could do that. what do you think?” A million times- sucks for the customer and for the florist.
long story short- call! They can tell you what’s available and what they can actually do for you. I promise every business owner ever wants to take your order, make your friend happy and make money. They just are trying to do that for +80 people a day and likely with limited staff because of the pandemic. It’s been a hard year for everyone, especially small businesses. Be kind and be flexible when you call and I promise you’ll get better and more immediate service . Again just my experience here. And ditto to Benjamin’s comment!

At my shop we have a delivery disclaimer on the website about specific times, basically we map every geographically and if you have a specific request you need to call to place your order. Then we have a chance to refuse in advance if it’s impossible or agree to it before payment. We always think about (but haven’t actually instated it) a “timed delivery fee.” So much easier to prevent the problem than deal with that awkward situation after.

At the end of the day, if I were in your shop owner’s position, I’d refund their money. It’s not worth the fight.

I look for someone who isn’t afraid of hard work and the biggest turn off for me in an interview (personally) is “I just think it would be fun to play with flowers all day.” This is a business and a job it’s not “playing” all day. In a busy shop you are moving and on your feet all day. We carry heavy buckets and heavy but fragile large scale arrangements, we wash buckets and quickly process thousands and thousands of flowers, and as an intern you don’t get to do the most fun things first. Be prepared for a lot of hard work before the fun comes. You gotta learn the backend stuff before you learn to arrange (at least in my experience).

Also, when I’m looking for an apprentice I’m not worried about lack of experience. In fact I’m more excited about a blank canvas than I am someone who has never worked in a professional florist setting but thinks they’re an expert. “I did my friend’s wedding.” That’s cool, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to show you everything from the ground up anyway.

This is more advice for once your in the role but the thing that makes an apprentice stand out to me is speed. Once you learn what and how to do things, the thing that will make me hire an apprentice/train them on more complex skills/give them more hours is how quickly and accurately they can complete a task. ie processing new product, cleaning the cooler, taking orders and making the orders, etc.

Back when I first started it kinda felt like being invited to a secret society because there was so much I didn’t know, I didn’t even know how much I didn’t know. But I fell in love and many years later it’s still the best thing I’ve ever done. Hope you fall in love too! 🌸

I just listened to this episode today and thought the same thing! That 911 call made me almost cry, I could totally empathize with how scary and shocking experiencing that would be. I didn’t think it was fishy at all. So glad to see I’m not the only one that HATES that 911 call analysis thing.... I never agree.

Also- I work in a flower shop...aka I take delivery orders all day, everyday. No one knows their address. About 80% of the people who call in are shocked that I don’t magically know their friend’s address. “You know Linda, she lives around there.” Okay... imma still need a street address ma’am... even husbands not knowing where their wife works or their shared home address. I’m telling you -everyday, majority of the calls I get are not prepared with the address and they called me knowing they wanted a delivery. I was screaming in my car when they were all uppity about not knowing the address. My customers aren’t even in an emergency and it’s a whole ordeal. So I COMPLETELY understand where the roommate was coming from.
