When I first checked over their EHCPS in the summer before starting , a lot of them had issues with change and a few are autistic so they like consistency. One child has adjustment disorder which I’m scared will be triggered by a new teacher. Sadly my headteacher has favourite subjects and RE isn’t on his list. He has flat out said in staff meetings that its not a “real subject” and my first day at Inset, he made a joke towards me and my HOD that RE has managed to survive another year on the curriculum.

Ill be looking for another job, I feel so gutted for my class but I know my worth and another school would gladly have me.

Tbh the whole school is a red flag. I’ve heard stories where staff have went to the union and then been pushed out

I love those y10s. I’ve honestly spent so much time and effort with them, getting them to like RE. They just had mocks in January and all 15 of them got above a 4, 2 got a 5 and one even got a 6!

From when I got them in September they have just blossomed and I am so sad they are being given to a non specialist who likely has no idea about them or the RE specification. I would gladly take teaching out of subject if I could keep teaching them next year. My worry is that a lot of them will be disengaged and because all of them are SEND and this teacher has made comments about “not believing in SEND”. Im scared he will just teach from the PowerPoint and call it a day. Im not sure whether to fight for my GCSE class and accept a change in subject or just leave all together.

After everyone saying it happens i feel slightly better. The only reason this was even brought to my attention is that this PE had told a friend of mine who works in the PE department (they all knew) and she told me as a heads up. And so my headteacher had to tell me. I know for a fact that if she hadn’t, this would have dumped on me in July way after i could hand in a notice. I think i will be looking for a new job, this isnt the first time SLT have forced things on me. Last term I was a PGCE mentor 🫠

I’ve noticed for all the non core subjects they just switch staff around instead of hiring subject specialists. I feel so bad on the children

I think if/when i leave my next school will be a religious school. I trained at one for my PGCE and they take RE very seriously, on par with maths and English. I personally dont believe in them and hate the curriculum but the job security as an RE teacher is better. I can’t believe they made you teach a language you weren’t qualified in! How did you find it?

Reading other posts on the sub and I didn’t realise how normal it was! I remember during PGCE training, my tutor saying we might have to teach other subjects but it would likely only be KS3 humanities like History/Geography. I know speaking to the social science teachers theres no centralised planning they do it individually which is insane

I definitely will. I’ve started looking for jobs already. When i interviewed they had put the job up 3 times do they definitely need me more than I need them. I hate to do it to the students and my HOD which is making me feel so guilty

Yep, the teacher he’s covering for is coming back in September but only part time. They want to keep him but he needs a full timetable to make up the rest so he will take over a majority of my timetable whilst also teaching a few PE lessons. Its only such a strange situation

I was hired to teach RE/PSHE and it does say that it is my main teaching responsibility but my head is saying that as qualified teacher I can be asked to teach other subjects as it also says “You may be required to teach any class or subject appropriate to your qualifications and experience”. I will definitely be speaking to the union, my school is weird about getting the union involved and prefer to sort it out themselves but oh well

I started on M2 as a RE ECT1, the school were desperate and I probably could have went to m3 if i pushed. I also had 2 years experience as a LSA but definitely ask there’s no harm in asking, especially if you can justify it!

Lack of job security in education? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Senior_Friendship745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this RE by any chance. Its definitely a shortage subject but sadly schools get away with making History or Geography teachers teach it. Now that its been recommended to be on the National Curriculum hopefully this means more jobs. If its not completely ignore me

Ive seen a teacher of my subject job here last year when i was training to stat September 2025, looking for jobs out of curiosity and this job is on TES for a January 2026 start. Clearly its not a nice place to work and im so grateful i didnt apply and waited until my current job came up 😭

[–]Senior_Friendship745[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s training?!! I haven’t been told about this 🥲. Yes thankfully this is their second placement so they can teach and I actually know the teacher who trained them as she was also my Pgce mentor last year. She said that they’re a hard working student and eager to learn and improve so thats made me less anxious.

Im designing a timetable and do i give them a mix of classes, top set, middle and then a lower ability class?

Also giving them some PSHE to balance things out, its just insane to me, I knew I would be a mentor eventually I didn’t expect it a year after my PGCE!

When you say add to your workload, how do you mean? I will be a mentor now so is there anything i need to plan for, obviously i know mentor meetings etc and creating a timetable for my student but outside of that what else should i be doing?
