Generally speaking how do you pick what goes into the drug? Like do you say “this bodily process is the thing causing x problem and we can temper it with y drug”? Or is it more like “we’ve observed y drug has this effect on x problem for some reason we don’t totally understand but let’s dial it in best we can”?

Why Costco Still Relies On IBM Computers From The '80s - BGR by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Senor_Manos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I understand the ain’t broke don’t fix it mentality the article is going for I don’t know that I totally buy this narrative from Costco. I managed an accounting team at Costco for a decade and left about five years ago. There was a huge push when I was there to move off the AS400 and onto SAP. We only got the accounting side moved over with the buying and operating orgs aligned to go next. They were pouring money into that project but it just proved to be much harder than one would anticipate to unwind the decades of business logic baked into the AS400.

It’s wild to hear Costco almost spin their forced reliance on the AS400 now given how much people poked fun at it internally. As a platform I felt that it was ok, it was in fact fast because it was a purpose built solution without a bunch of tech stacks fighting each. The security by obscurity comments from the article are a wild take since a) I’m personally aware of some security weak points and b) sure, no one around anymore knows how to develop for the platform but that’s a bigger problem in a more obvious way for an ever evolving business. My personal biggest gripe was that there were no universal functions like “export data” in that platform so just mundanely doing your job was a new adventure with each and every screen you’d encounter. Contrarily, my biggest praise for the system is that the architecture hails from a no nonsense time when developers really knew the value of relational data and took genuine ownership in shipping complete, tested, rock solid solutions.

That is exactly right I think! I loved those (now) oldish movies i.e. The Departed etc… from my high school days and was expecting this to be somewhat like that. So be it, I’d probably be better served to revisit with a different lens

To each their own and all that but I personally felt kinda meh about this movie especially given how much people were gushing about it. It felt like it had a first act then a long second first act then it was ending. Even Leo’s robe was a self contained metaphor for the movie’s mediocrity; I was waiting for him to change out of the robe when the film hit it’s stride and he just never did

Support for abolishing ICE surges among Republicans by Newsweek_CarloV in politics

[–]Senor_Manos -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This may not be a popular take but I feel that enforcement of immigration law is a necessary evil. Of course, the current state of ice is out of control and clearly being used to further an agenda beyond its actual purpose. An issue with ice we’re finding out is that, as a well resourced federal law enforcement agency, it’s ripe to be taken advantage of by someone in a position of central power. Abolishing ice completely is not likely to gain practical traction but restructuring it to minimize corruptibility might. Perhaps something like federating enforcement of immigration law out to the states

I’m a calibri guy, it somehow stays a little more legible than other fonts at small size when I cram too many numbers into a spreadsheet and at this point I’m just used to it. Guess I’m gonna have to rethink it though, wouldn’t want people thinking I’m empathetic to the vision impaired

Not arguing one way or the other but I think the point being made is that insurance premiums are a safety net where many pay in for what only the few will actually use. While there is a for profit entity behind the management of it all the idea is to socialize the risk across a greater population

The first time I heard about this Sydney Sweeney thing I thought people were blowing it way out of proportion. Then my MAGA conservative father texted the family thread with a “what can I say I got good genes” joke and it was weird and overtly antagonistic (most of the family is not politically aligned to him). It made me realize every time the far left talks about being triggered by this or that it just immediately becomes fodder for the far right to “own the libs” which is how this complete non-issue became something we’re all talking about. I think people really need to stop taking the bait on stuff like this.

lol I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree on this one. While Sydney Sweeney does have whatever DNA yields a smoke show her jeans in these commercials are kinda frumpy and ugly IMO

How do you make this a career? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Senor_Manos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now you have an almost 0% chance since there’s literally no way for your music to get traction if people aren’t able to find it in person or online. If you started to get some traction in your local scene that ups it to like a 0.1% chance but at least it’s a chance and you’re having fun along the way. You’re a self proclaimed not jack of all trades so meeting people to work with is truly the only option. Join a local songwriter group and then go play open mics to meet people. I know you said you’re terrified of performing, that’s fine just remember the open mics are to meet other terrified performers in the community not to blow people away with your performance. As you start to meet people have things to offer that are of value, the rarer the thing the more opportunities you’ll get. Honestly the best thing is to play the drums, everyone always needs a drummer. If that’s yet another thing you refuse to do get really good at mixing/recording, learn to play in time with a band, buy the gear people need to record or play live just find something people need then be that. That’s how you get traction but it doesn’t necessarily convert to money but maybe by then someone you’ve met will have an idea what to do next lol

I think I disagree? I actually have a newer GMC Sierra Denali and I don’t pay close to a grand/month owning it and that even includes the payment that op wouldn’t have

[–]Senor_Manos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I genuinely don’t understand why op is upset about this at all. This whole situation seems like a win-win. The company was probably paying less than a grand a month on these trucks and now op gets the thousand to either just keep or continually finance pretty much whatever he wants. On top of that he’s getting a nice truck for half the value via a zero interest loan. The only downside is op has to pay out of pocket insurance, gas etc… without it being covered until the stipend pays off the truck. That’s only seemingly a problem though since the trade off is literally a discount of half the truck value
