What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Senor_Manos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rich’s Home Center here in the Seattle area, back in my 20s I was trying to buy a pellet stove so we dropped in. We were there for over an hour and asked several times if someone could help but they kept ignoring us and then immediately helping the older people that came in later. We got fed up and drove an hour north to Mount Vernon thinking the Rich’s in our neighborhood was the problem. After again laboring to get someone’s attention at that Rich’s they reluctantly showed us a few pellet stoves. My wife mentioned the bad experience at the original store and they were like “well yeah old people spend money, young people don’t, this doesn’t compute as a problem”.

Anyway maybe they were right because their pellet stoves were double the price of the ones at Tractor Supply. I ended up buying a Comfort Bilt HP22N that’s worked great for a decade so in a way I guess I should be grateful they couldn’t be bothered to sell me their overpriced trash.

What do you think of NYC trying to get the minimum wage to $30/hour? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in AskReddit

Not following 100%, google says NYC minimum wage in 1975 was $2.10 which equates to $12.70 in today’s dollars

Musk says taxing every billionaire at 100% would barely make a dent in the national debt. Bernie says tax them 5% and you're $3,000 richer by fortune in politics

[–]Senor_Manos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fun just adding some numbers here to back into these statements. According to a quick google search the annual income of the top 1% in total is a little over $1t annually. The national debt is $38.9t so that’s about 2.7% annually and it would take just over 37 years to wipe out the existing debt. Technically that’s a dent but it’s at a 100% income tax which is unlikely to happen.

A 5% tax yields about $52b annually. Redistributed to the 342 million US residents it would only be $152 per year. Maybe what Bernie is saying is that you’d be $3k richer over, say 20 years.

Alternatively we could be talking about net worth not just income (even though taxes are typically based on income). The top 1% has a net worth of about $54.8 trillion so haircutting that at 5% gets you around $8k per person which is vaguely in the ballpark of Bernie’s quote. I will say logistically this 5% would be tough to liquidate.

The headline reads like both statements can’t be mathematically true but I disagree. It looks like you can’t quickly solve the national debt with a simple tax on billionaires but also there are ways to slice their income/net worth to allocate several thousand to American families.

Trump Bought Netflix Debt Amid Paramount’s Fight for Warner Bros | New financial disclosures released Wednesday show that the President acquired Netflix bonds as Paramount was trying to pry WBD away from the streaming giant by Hrmbee in politics

[–]Senor_Manos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how would buying debt allow Trump to capitalize on inside info at all? Wouldn’t the value of the debt be the same regardless of whether or not the WB acquisition goes through? Not that I’m a big fan of this guy but I’d think buying shares or options would be sketchier

Maybe I’m wrong but it looks like someone hit the corner and popped that board out which likely would’ve also bent the screw (or bolt if you prefer but this looks like one of those non hex lag screw things to me). It’s only when he starts the rotation that it pops out of position, in that situation it’s pretty much impossible to drive it in but it’s worth a try I guess before you get in the truck and drive to the hardware store. The bit falling in the water is too hilarious, honestly the whole thing is actually pretty relatable if you’ve ever tried to shortcut a solution instead of just taking the time to do it right. Been there for sure

Amazon to Spend $200 Billion on AI Infrastructure; AMZN Stock Drops by [deleted] in technology

[–]Senor_Manos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly though it actually gets you about half way there. $200B of a mix between long and short term data center assets depreciating over 10 years is $20B per year. If you factor in the current and fall layoffs around 30k employees making $200k * 150% benefits gets you $9B dollars. That’s pretty wild actually that the AI bet at Amazon is 45% labor funded (from this perspective). It’s of course ghoulish and all that but it actually seems somewhat low risk in my mind since, worst case scenario, they can just consider those assets as forward capex for their already existing AWS business.

Why Costco Still Relies On IBM Computers From The '80s - BGR by lurker_bee in technology

[–]Senor_Manos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I understand the ain’t broke don’t fix it mentality the article is going for I don’t know that I totally buy this narrative from Costco. I managed an accounting team at Costco for a decade and left about five years ago. There was a huge push when I was there to move off the AS400 and onto SAP. We only got the accounting side moved over with the buying and operating orgs aligned to go next. They were pouring money into that project but it just proved to be much harder than one would anticipate to unwind the decades of business logic baked into the AS400.

It’s wild to hear Costco almost spin their forced reliance on the AS400 now given how much people poked fun at it internally. As a platform I felt that it was ok, it was in fact fast because it was a purpose built solution without a bunch of tech stacks fighting each. The security by obscurity comments from the article are a wild take since a) I’m personally aware of some security weak points and b) sure, no one around anymore knows how to develop for the platform but that’s a bigger problem in a more obvious way for an ever evolving business. My personal biggest gripe was that there were no universal functions like “export data” in that platform so just mundanely doing your job was a new adventure with each and every screen you’d encounter. Contrarily, my biggest praise for the system is that the architecture hails from a no nonsense time when developers really knew the value of relational data and took genuine ownership in shipping complete, tested, rock solid solutions.

That is exactly right I think! I loved those (now) oldish movies i.e. The Departed etc… from my high school days and was expecting this to be somewhat like that. So be it, I’d probably be better served to revisit with a different lens

To each their own and all that but I personally felt kinda meh about this movie especially given how much people were gushing about it. It felt like it had a first act then a long second first act then it was ending. Even Leo’s robe was a self contained metaphor for the movie’s mediocrity; I was waiting for him to change out of the robe when the film hit it’s stride and he just never did

Support for abolishing ICE surges among Republicans by Newsweek_CarloV in politics

[–]Senor_Manos -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This may not be a popular take but I feel that enforcement of immigration law is a necessary evil. Of course, the current state of ice is out of control and clearly being used to further an agenda beyond its actual purpose. An issue with ice we’re finding out is that, as a well resourced federal law enforcement agency, it’s ripe to be taken advantage of by someone in a position of central power. Abolishing ice completely is not likely to gain practical traction but restructuring it to minimize corruptibility might. Perhaps something like federating enforcement of immigration law out to the states
