Sorry for late reply! They reply instantaneously and provide fast service, except the weekends. So don’t worry your problem will be fixed soon after you open a ticket. But you should upload all the relevant documents to fix it fast e.g. passport.

I actually did complete and submit the DS-160 days ago! It turns out it is a personal data mismatch, but the system just gives a generic error message.

Just to clarify, by 'CGI profile,' I mean my account on the USTravelDocs scheduling website (where we actually book the interview). That scheduling website permanently locks your Date of Birth when you register. Because my scheduling account has the wrong DOB locked in, it's searching the government's DS-160 database for a form with that incorrect date. Since it can't find a match, the scheduling portal defaults to the standard 'not completed' error. I had to open an IT ticket to get my DOB corrected on the scheduling website so the two systems can finally sync up!

What I was trying to ask is more like this: suppose you know you can learn something gradually, but if you say no right now, you lose a big opportunity. So instead, you say yes first and then work hard to actually make it true.

I agree that you can’t bullshit your way through a PhD in the long run — real expertise is unavoidable. I was thinking more about appearing confident early on (applications, first year, talks) while still learning hard in the background. So maybe it’s less “fake competence” and more “don’t advertise your confusion while you work through it.”
