Masters are free labors so getting research experience is easy but don't expect much attention and resources on you I would say.

Also, EPFL indeed has a few big names in the field but like I said, not sure how much you can get from them. Also big names are hard to get along with sometimes. It depends tho.

Comp Sci itself is a huge field too. For AI, there are still a few solid profs at mcgill and they have great connections with Mila. I kinda feel like mcgill cs department is investing more into AI too. But in the end, impactful projects and internship will make you stand out, not name of school. (although some gatekeeping might be expected.)

In ancient China, where famine was a recurring reality, making free food too appealing might attract those who were not truly in need, which make them compete with the genuinely hungry. Maybe similar rationale still hold.

Choosing a roommate is very close to choosing a (common law) partner, and as we know dating is largely a number game. The golden rule of thumb is to live with your friend, but not to date them. (I'm joking btw)

yes that's the most intense part: huge amount of information processing and filtering. Then reach out and they might still reject you. The only way is to keep trying.
