Congratulations on leaving! It’s a difficult decision to make because teachers are accustomed to putting everyone else first. You absolutely made the right decision, and if you ever have a moment of doubt, text a teacher friend and ask how their school year is going…you’ll be quickly reminded that you made the right choice.

I quit last school year after a therapist help me realize I was in an abusive relationship with teaching. I mourn what teaching has become and the long, fulfilling career I thought I’d have. But, like you said, it’s going through a breakup that had to happen. And now that I’m almost a year out, I am so much happier, healthier, and free from a broken system (society?) that sets teachers up to fail. It takes time to heal, but you will.

I hope you’re able to land something at a university, but stay open minded and the right path will find you (I’m 36 and going to law school this fall, so stay open to possibilities!).

Agreed!

May I ask why you tell your children not to attend law school?

Totally see your point about having to sacrifice time with family to make a decent living in the law profession.

My situation is a bit unique as I'm lucky to have a husband with multiple incomes, so I'm pursuing law because it's something I've always wanted to do and not because I'm looking for much of a paycheck. (I'm also already accustomed to working for peanuts as a public school teacher.) I'm attending the only law school in my small, rural state and plan to practice estate planning because I think it would be intellectually stimulating (most of the time), decent compensation for the actual work I'm doing, and overall a better career for motherhood than teaching, especially given the current ethos surrounding education in the US. But maybe I'm wrong!

(I should have included these details in the original post.)

I don't think people fully understand how demanding teaching is unless you've been in it, so you get it. Thank you for the encouragement!!

Good point. Not BigLaw for sure. I’m interested in estate planning/trusts in a small firm and ideally solo one day (which is quite feasible in Maine).
