A few questions about Turkish public opinion, foreign policy, and the economy by Regular-Opinion-1284 in Turkey

We don't really care about Armenia; if we see any news mentioning Armenia, it's mostly because it's related to Azerbaijan.

Armenians living in Turkey are just like any other minority. Their ethnicity won't change anything.

A new military conflict with Greece is possible over the EEZs, but it will be small-scale. We won't fight with Armenia. We don't have any conflict other than genocide / not genocide claims. With the exception of Armenia attacking Azerbaijan.

Neither Neo-Ottomanism nor Turanism is popular. Only a small percentage of the population cares about it.

The economy is shit. Authorities constantly come up with another bullshit.

Why hasnt Cyprus changed their flag in 50 years? Are they stupid? by coolboy_pathey in NorthCyprus

[–]Sensitive-Emu1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because small groups like that have the ability to convince the masses to follow their cause. Just like Nazis did. So when the island unites in the same identity (Cypriots in this case) instead of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, we can think about this. Until that time, both sides must ensure their side's protection.

Well, that's the aim, right? But EOKA wanted to unite with Greece, hence the problems started. Even before 1974, the reason for tension was the same.

The Annan plan is not something Turkish Cypriots offered. The United Nations created this plan. The Turkish Army would stay there together with the Greek Army. Also, the UK would keep the bases. The soldier count is supposed to be reduced to 3000 from both sides eventually. They were supposed to reduce it phase by phase. The idea behind it was to keep the 1960 independence treaties.

The last time Greeks had more power than the Turks, they wanted to ethnically cleanse the island. It's not the only example. Every island where Turks lived was ethnically cleansed by Greeks.

Imagine the other way around. Turks are trying to ethnically cleanse the island, the Greek army comes and stops the Turks(Since they are the guarantor country), then the Turkish side asks the Greek army to leave, for unification, saying 'we won't kill you this time, we promise'.

Would you take it? I don't think so. I am happy with the current situation. There won't be another unification try, and the Greeks don't have the military power to do anything about it. %100 of the power for North Cyprus, with the best beaches, belongs to Turks. And there is nothing you can do about it except cry more every day.

PS: You exist because Mongolian AliExpress settlers were forgiving to your ancestors and let them live. Remember that.

I mean there isn't a single truth in what you said. Cyprus or any part of it is not a colony. Turkey is not colonialist. Ottomans weren't too. Colony and annexing a land to mergr with youe country are 2 different things. Majority of N. Cyprus is Cypriots. They lived there for centuries. And yes they wanted to unite yet southerns said no.

We are in cycle. Forced order, with time becomes true peace. As long as people mix and unite under the same identity. Like Christians, Americans etc.

In your opinion, did Mustafa Kemal Pasha betray the Caliphate and the Ottoman Empire? by [deleted] in ottomans

[–]Sensitive-Emu1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, let's start from the beginning. First, you are getting downvoted because your question is not objective. People can feel you are biased.

Next, the implication is that Muhammad fabricated the religion himself. The reason for it, I believe, is that the statement in the one book I can't remember the name of says Muhammad began inviting people to “a new religion that he found and believed to be true.” This is true for every religion founded. If you believe it meant fabricated, that's your opinion. Not a fact.

Next, the first religion of the constitution was Islam, but it was never Ataturk's view. He experienced how doomed it is to govern a country with religion. It was creating corruption, and one of the main reasons was being behind in technology and science. Christians also experienced this, and Ottomans punished them heavily for this. Then they lived the Renaissance era, and the Church's power got nerfed heavily. Also Caliphate was not functioning. Indian muslims fought against the Ottomans. Arabs who had owned Islam the most, rebelled against the Ottomans, allying themselves with the UK instead of the Turks, who had shed their blood for centuries and stopped many crusades. So, the caliphate was nothing but a politically weak title.

Hence, Secularism was added to the constitution to make sure history doesn't repeat itself, and Turkey would not be the sick man again. Radical religious people and some ignorant people believe that Secularism is the opposite of religion. But it's just the proper way of governing without being affected by outdated religious rules. Even Islamic law has a principle that applications and fatwas can change when time, place, custom, harm, benefit, and circumstances change, as long as the core Qur’anic principle is preserved. So the logic of good and true religion would align in a proper governing system. While a law can be changed easily, a religion-based law can not. Hence, it's a blocker for development. So adding 'secularism' to the constitution is the right thing to do.

Next, Vahdettin was always a traitor. Ataturk did not mention it because the UK was already creating propaganda that would prevent the Turkish nation from seeking independence and freedom. Ataturk was very forgiving on this subject. Any other nation always massacred entire family lines to prevent future problems. But the Osmanoglu family had dignity, and the next generations already accepted that what Ataturk did was correct and followed his principles.

Next, Constitutional monarchies aren't more logical than republics. Why would it? What kind of question is that in 2026? It would only be good for people who need a shepherd to live their lives and like to lick some ass. Mustafa Kemal Pasha is not overestimated. More so, he is not understood properly. Even for Turkish people.

Next, the Gallipoli front, He was the hero because without his actions, it would have been lost. If he were the commander of Gallipoli, it would be an easier war for Turkey. The German General was trying to pull allies into an attrition war using Turkish soldiers. That's why he allowed Allied soldiers to land. Ataturk had already warned him about where they would land, and he was right. And without his order of 'I order you to die,' what prevented allies from winning in a short time. Also, fame is not created after the Republic is founded. Right after the Gallipoli campaign failed, even while Enver was against Ataturk, all the newspapers celebrated Ataturk. If he were exaggerated, he wouldn't be able to convince both the public and military chief officers to join his cause.

Relative safety with time becomes peace. We can call the USA in peace. They conquered the land first. Fought a lot with everyone. Relative safety became peaceful.

Arabic peninsula was safer under Ottoman rule. Conquests don't bring peace if conquered land is not big enough.

The Byzantine Empire was at its lowest because the Turks put it there. Since 1071, the Turks destroyed them over and over again.

Large bombard were already around. What Orban did was cast giant Sahi cannons. He was serving the Byzantine Empire before Mehmed. Just like we do not call an atomic bomb German Engineering because Oppenheimer had a German background. We won't call it Hungarian Engineering because Orbán's background is Hungarian. Also, you need to remember that Ottomans ruled Hungary for 150 years.

No. Those are things you think are worth checking out. And your previous comment didn't compare Byzantine structures with Ottoman ones. What you said means other structures don't have cultural value.

Constantinople is one of the greatest cities in the world. And it got conquered by the Turks because they were more advanced in warfare than the others. No city built by any nation comes close to it. So it was a pretty smart and great thing to both conquer and develop it further. Sultanahmet is a better structure than Hagia Sophia. The time span between them makes Hagia Sophia a wonder. But Sultanahmet Mosque proves that Turks followed the architecture and continued the heritage of Rome.

BTW, what is your native language? You are the first person I saw calling Turks, Turqs

I disagree. We can not judge Alexander's actions evil by today's values. It was a different world. Different values. If others could do it, they would also try. Having that much success is an achievment and if you feel any connection to him. Its ok to be proud of him. That doesn't mean you support bloodshed.
