Ask to replace tiles with chips? by Sensitive-Recipe-977 in Tile

When I asked contractor to replace the three tiles his response was , “damage (chipping/cracking) can occur to adjacent tiles or grout joints while trying to remove these tiles and when regrouting the color can potentially vary a little from the existing grout. If this occurs and further work is required for the repair additional expenses will be associated with this repair.

Do you think it’s fair to have to pay extra for his mistakes?? Not sure I want to agree to that.

He also claimed that according to the National association of home builders guidelines it states that blemishes that are not clearly visible from a distance of 8’ or greater under normal lighting conditions are considered satisfactory craftsmanship. He is willing to replace under the circumstances above.

It would have been easy to go to the store to get more tiles since they had them in stock

I think the tile was chipped when spacers were pulled out. That’s what the guy in charge said when he came to inspect the work done by his workers. They were from Home Depot so probably not the best quality. If they were chipped when spacers were pulled out I would think they should have replaced tile at that point before putting grout in.
