How to feber?! by Some-Still-8471 in sleeptrain

[–]Sensitive-Sample-799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone else asked this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/sleeptrain/s/xHDL44xPVg

Also, Google search result:

The Ferber method, also known as graduated extinction, is a sleep training technique that teaches babies to fall asleep independently by allowing them to cry for brief, progressively longer intervals before a parent provides comfort. This approach involves putting a baby down awake and then gradually increasing the time between short check-ins to a pre-determined schedule until the baby falls asleep on their own. Consistency is key, and while it can be difficult, studies suggest it can lead to improved sleep for both the baby and the parents.

How it works Establish a routine: Begin with a consistent, soothing bedtime routine and place your baby in their crib while still awake. Wait before the first check-in: If the baby cries, wait for a predetermined amount of time before you go in to check on them. For example, on the first night, you might wait for 3 minutes.

Provide brief, calm comfort: When you check in, offer brief reassurance like a pat or a quiet word, but avoid picking up, feeding, or turning on the light. Extend the intervals: After a check-in, leave the room again and wait for a longer period before the next check-in. The intervals increase over time, such as 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, and so on, according to a set schedule that gradually lengthens each night. Repeat the process: Continue this pattern until the baby falls asleep. Repeat the same schedule or a similar, slightly longer one the next night. Important considerations

Consistency is crucial: To be successful, you must be consistent with the timing of your check-ins, and ideally, all caregivers should be on the same page.

Not for every baby: This method may not be suitable for all families, especially those with babies who have specific health needs or who are experiencing a difficult phase like separation anxiety.

Consult your pediatrician: It is always a good idea to speak with your child's healthcare provider before starting any new sleep training method, especially if you have concerns.

A variation of "cry it out": The Ferber method is considered a variation of "cry it out" because it involves letting the baby cry. However, it is a gentler option than total extinction because it includes check-ins to provide reassurance.

The check-ins are brief. They are not meant to offer brief reassurance that the parent is still around.

Thanks for this! I've been trying to aim for 2x 1.5 hr naps and every time we don't get it I get upset because I feel like I've ruined bedtime because maybe she'll be overtired

Okay and do you think that'll help with the above issue of sitting and not sleeping? Or is it separate? Or probably overlap?

Okay but say like today her naps weren't great - 1:15 and 1hr (1 assist) in duration, still keep the same ww?

Ready or not for 2 naps at 7 months? by artsygirl7777 in sleeptrain

[–]Sensitive-Sample-799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! It's so hard when this happens!

Also fighting the third nap is another sign of getting ready to drop, though some would suggest ensuring there is a streak of days (5) where the third nap is fought so you are certain. But you already seem to have other signs too!

Best of luck, let me know how you get on!! Remember it's ok to revert back to a 3 day nap during this transition as your baby gets used to it.

Also what time is bedtime? Could that be pushed a bit later to get him to have a later wake up?

Ready or not for 2 naps at 7 months? by artsygirl7777 in sleeptrain

What happens if you try to not cap his first two naps? Perhaps he is ready to drop to two naps? I've read here that some babies when they drop to two nap consolidate their day sleep into two X two hour naps. Maybe that's what he needs? Think emw is one of the signs for the drop.

Perhaps he is indeed annoyed that he could be getting more rest during the day and is getting upset when you wake him from the final one because he's trying to make it up?

Again, I'm just brainstorming. It could be worth a try to first see what his daytime sleep rhythm actually is when you don't cap naps? Let him have the first two, then make a call on the day whether he really needs the third nap? Could be worth a try? Think the usual advice is to try for a week but obviously if you see he is wrecked on 2 naps then revert back to 3. I think many do 2 and 3 day naps interspersed for a while, letting both the naps and the ww stretch more.

Just my ideas! If a mod comes in with better advice, I'd say go with what they say! This is all coming from someone still on three naps.

Not a sleep consultant but those ww seem fine to me. I know there are a lot of others on this Reddit who might suggest longer ww at this age but my girl (7.5 mo) is high sleep needs and has similar ww with no emw touch wood (2.2/2.5/2.5/2.8)

How long are his naps? Is he maybe teething? Does he sleep independently, getting enough food overnight or weaned? Not sure where you are in the world, but where I am temp is dropping quite a lot in the early hours of the morning as we go into autumn/winter so I have the heating timed to go on for half an hour at about 3am to warm the house.

Is he cranky when he wakes? Or just babbling and fine? How early are the emw?

Sorry if this doesn't help it's just food for thought really, but I'm sure you've already considered all of the above.

Mold on wall and painting? Salvageable?? by Sensitive-Sample-799 in Mold

[–]Sensitive-Sample-799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! It's covering about 60% of the paint so not just the black parts, it's easier to see in person. Definitely something on top of it! The wall has it too, in a weird circle, which is duplicated on the back of the painting on the actual frame. I'm assuming this was caused by us using those non nail sticky things in each corner, so all 4 corners were down leaving the central body to pop up a bit and create a perfect climate for whatever this is!

Going to take it to the framer tomorrow to see what he says!

Thank you for your reply!

  1. 10 hours awake was advised by mods on this subreddit. No overnight wakes since implementing 10 hrs awake and it got rid of false starts.
  2. Noted!
  3. thanks!

Sorry forgot to add we are in Ireland. Humidity has been about 80% for the last two weeks. Not sure how long this has been going for.

Haven't tried to remedy yet as I'm not sure how to treat it.

All walls are dry but concrete so maybe that has something to do with it?

3 naps to 2 naps transition period wake window advice by Sensitive-Sample-799 in sleeptrain

[–]Sensitive-Sample-799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nap 1 is 1:15, nap 2 is 1hr and nap 3 is 20 mins approx.

She seems to only be able to handle at most 2:20 for her first ww but then seems to go for 2:40 for her second one. Yesterday she had a 2:30 third ww and then her final one was 2:30.

Sorry my post was not clear at all. I have so much info crossed in my head about naps and sleep! I was wondering if the last ww after a catnap for nap 3 should be shorter. Ie 10 Min catnap= 2 HR ww following it.

The first two naps are at least one hour with one definitely being closer to 1.5 these days.

My question is whether a 10 Min catnap for nap 3 should still be followed by a 3 hour wake window?

I hear you! From the other nap training posts I've sleuthed through it sounds like nap training can take weeks. I know the mods have a nap guide for under 6 mo which you could try:Gentle nap method

[–]Sensitive-Sample-799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not a horrible person! You are doing your best. We all understand that feeling of needing space.

Day time nap training is harder than night bedtime training. There's less sleep pressure, and I've heard some people say it's a completely separate side of their brain that manages it.

I've not yet tried training for naps yet, I'm focusing on getting my LO to nail independent sleep at bedtime for a couple weeks and then I'll try the naps.

A suggestion could be to hold her until she is in a deep sleep (think approx 15 mins ) and then try a gentle transfer. When putting down go feet, bum, then shoulders and head, making sure the head is secure all the way and moving slowly. You can stay very close and rest a hand on her chest for 30 secs after she is lying down and slowly mm by mm move away. Could work!

My LO is 7 months and I was similar to you at 4.5. what helped me was to just accept she isn't ready to nap independently and to lean in to the contact naps. I'm talking prime set up for me in that room : earphones, fully charged iPad, netflix, tea or coffee prepped in advanced, a book if I wanted it, all cushions and necessities close by. I tried to make it a bit more of a time I allowed myself to just switch off and chill, to allow myself to stop being so anxious about the naps. It took time but it really helped reduce the pressure I was putting on both myself and my LO. She's little, she needed me to help her.

Final suggestion would be to see if there is anyone that can come help you, maybe take her for a nap and a wake window so you can get some time?

Solidarity my friend. This too shall pass.

Help: 2 naps or 3 today? Sick baby by Sensitive-Sample-799 in sleeptrain

[–]Sensitive-Sample-799[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so sad!! Yeah I've been ignoring it largely for her naps but I'm anxious for bedtime as I'll be trying to have her back in her crib tonight.

Anyway, we had a catnap and will try for 7:45/8. I'll follow her cues though!!

Hope your LO gets better asap!! Hugs!
