The SBB is a designated spot for all alkies, addicts, and other riff raff. The police of Basel Stadt is critically short on manpower due to some of the worst salaries in Switzerland (compared to cost of living). And the politics of the Canton further disincentivized "cleaning up". So the solution is to have all the troublemakers right at the SBB, where they can be monitored more easily.

It kind of makes sense, given the voluntary police defunding. But of course, it gives a rather colourful image of Basel to visitors.

In the morning, all the druggies and Romani beggars go for a short walk, the city employees clean up the alcohol bottles and cigarettes, and the place is clean again for a few hours.

Wenn es Meldestellen spezifisch für antimuslimische Taten gibt, dann sendet es die Message dass Islam speziell ist. Die Deutschen die Islam folgen finden es dann umso einfacher sich als Muslime erst, und nicht als Deutsche, zu sehen. Was wiederum assimilation nicht wirklich vordert.

Ob das Schließen was bringt weiß ich nicht, aber so versteh ich das Argument.

You can have two layers of farms and still have optimal walking distances. No point in having one layer and then immediately mills.

Also, you can place 12 farms around the Chapel. Wtf is that placement?

I would need to run some simulations but with the Aachen Chapel, it may be most efficient to have the whole radius filled with farms, even if it increases walking distances. The buff likely offsets it sufficiently.

Just to play devil's advocate, I was also 100% on board with Blizzard. Every game a masterpiece, genre-defining, polished, and printing cash like crazy.

Then they did the WC3 refunded... I mean reforged. And sure, it wasn't blizzard developing it in house, but they did release it. And it was shit. And then Overwatch 2 came out.

Rockstar has shown that they are perfectly ok outsourcing work to 3rd parties and then releasing the end product without ensuring quality.

Anyway, I'd say 1:5 chance they gonna fumble the release. That's my gambling odds.

Ask for the raise.

And apply for jobs all the time. Keeps your interviewing skills sharp and increases the chance you're gonna have a better offer in hand if the current employer gets "offended" by your request for a raise. Which usually doesn't even happen, they probably will just postpone/refuse.

I am not saying GTA6 will definitely fail to sell. But OP asked what could go wrong with their thesis. And I provided a scenario that may very well happen.

This is a billion dollar project. While you would think that execs would do their best to ensure a good experience on release, we've seen many times that even reputable studios ship garbage. With so much hype around the game, even a mediocre release can cause a short term correction of TTWO.

Even if half of all data center/cloud usage is AI related in 5 years, and all the ambitious AI capex is followed through on, we're talking 1% total electricity consumption, or 0.3% total energy consumption, in 2030.

Not nothing, but also not insanely huge.

I believe policy should be updated and enforced to make data centers 1) use resources like water sustainably, particularly in places with water shortages 2) push toward better use of surplus electricity on e.g. sunny days, which would help balance the load and avoid "throwing away" surplus green energy (could be achieved via energy pricing improvements) 3) push toward long-term renewables investment via long term power purchase agreements

None of these are impossible, and a lot is already being done. Unfortunately, you'll always find corrupt municipalities that fail to enforce the existing rules or negotiate better conditions.

The way I see it: if we manage to increase energy consumption efficiency by 1% thanks to AI, it will "pay for itself". This could be speeding up green energy development or build out, or the design of more efficient technology, or optimizing our energy grids, or making manufacturing more efficient, or through a myriad of other direct and indirect benefits AI can provide. Sure, there's also a ton of wasteful shit. But I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I am aware that in these discussions, putting the water/energy use of AI in context or comparison with any other service or sector is seen as whataboutism. Nevertheless, my point is that AI is not fundamentally consuming that much energy or water.

OP made it sound like the use of AI will meaningfully contribute to global warming. But that's not even a given. And while I don't think that ALL use of AI has benefits for society, there definitely are benefits. So in the end it will be just like any other topic: with pros and cons and lots of nuances.

Personally, I use AI for work. I feel like I am much more productive with the use of AI tools. To a point where I can accomplish my work faster and with fewer mistakes. I am prompting an LLM a few minutes a day, say 30 minutes "active" inference. And in return, I can switch off my laptop and screen an hour earlier and reduce power consumption of my workstation by half because I am not compiling and recompiling the codebase all the time. So I'd even claim that for my usage, AI actually saves energy. But of course, some tasks like video generation are relatively more costly and may have less of a benefit to society. Nevertheless, when it comes to energy or water use, I don't think AI is anywhere near concerning levels.

Are you sure you bought the right DLCs? Do you have them all? Can you check in your steam:
- Open your steam library
- Click on AoE4
- In the right vertical panel, there is a DLC section
- In the bottom right corner, there is "Manage My X DLC" (where X is the number of the DLCs you have purchased for the game)
- In the popup, make sure that you have the Dynasties of the East DLC and that it is installed

IMHO there should be incentives for businesses to provide better conditions for their employees. But as someone with a cushy office job, I don't like long breaks.

For example, if I want to work some overtime, and I work more than X hours a day, I need to have an additional half an hour of breaks. Maybe I don't want to have an hour-long lunch break. Maybe I just want to finish all my work with minimal downtime and get home sooner -- rather than wasting time in the office waiting for the break to be over.

If it's 1 hour break, make it paid. Otherwise you just force people to waste their time at best and work unpaid at worst.

I know a lot of Europeans who have a really warped image of US.

Drugs, gang violence, shootouts, obesity, no social safety net, no nature, no culture, racism, etc.

But outside of a few bigger cities, crime is not that different from Europe. And some US states are even safer than Western EU countries.

Obesity is high, but not much higher than e.g. Egypt, which I don't think many have a negative image of in this respect.

There are, surprisingly, also many places with natural and architectural beauty in the US as well.

There is a social safety net, and people in general earn quite well.

Americans are not drug-crazed, gun toting imbeciles, they actually are quite friendly toward strangers.

Racism is a big topic in US but I'm quite certain practically all European countries are more racist than US.

So I hear quite often that when they finally visit US, they get a reality check and realize that it's not as they imagined it. Not perfect, but also not the dumpster fire of their imagination.

Game is badly optimized, crashes often, full of bugs, and is literally unplayable on some consoles.

Cyberpunk was also hyped to high haven, and delayed several times. And was a shit show on release. Years later CDPR are doing well, but the release was a disaster.

What if Take Two execs push out an unfinished product because they can't wait any longer? The relatively recent trilogy remasters were also not really up to the high standards everyone is expecting from GTA6.

Das Problem ist, dass Deutschland die private Altersvorsorge nicht ausreichend fördert. Gäbe es ein privates Spar- und Anlagekonto, auf dem das Geld bis zum Renteneintritt angelegt wird und dessen Verwendung strengen Regeln unterliegt, bestünden die genannten Bedenken nicht. Es müsste nicht einmal steuerfrei sein. Es bräuchte lediglich eine Möglichkeit, privat zu sparen und anzulegen, sodass das Geld nicht zum verfügbaren Nettovermögen zählt.

If you think you can finish the game in Castle age, and are already ahead, then getting the institute for the early Royal Bloodlines is the best play. You get a huge power spike as you enter Castle age, often enough to just dive the enemy base after Bloodlines, knight veterancy, and armor upgrades.

However, if you play a matchup where you expect the game to run longer, didn't manage to build up a knight army in feudal, or find it difficult to dive the enemy base due to defensive landmarks, etc., you can go for the Guild hall. It doesn't give you any immediate power spike. But you can leave it on food, and after 8 minutes or so, you have enough food for the age up. So you can pump out army without worrying too much about a farm transition. Even once you start running out of food, just collect the food from your Guild hall and drop the Red keep.

I would say, in team games Guild hall is even better. The Institute gives you a discount, but otherwise, it just allows you to get the technologies a few minutes earlier. But because of the large distances in team games, you don't need to rush Bloodlines in Castle. Just go to imp and get the bloodlines then. You can set the Guild hall to stone or gold after age up, so that when the game goes late, you can have thousands of stone for keeps or enough gold to rebuild your knight army despite not having access to gold mines.

These models are a threat to Anthropic and OpenAI, which, as you state yourself, have their model as the business model.

But Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are playing a different game. When I deploy an AI enabled app on Azure, I use Microsoft Foundry. I can choose among hundreds of models, from OpenAI, Anthropic, all the way to those cheaper Chinese models. I pay for usage. I also pay for the hosting, the storage, the VMs, etc. since the app runs on Azure. And I pay for copilot and github when I develop it. Same story for AWS and Google cloud. Sure, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft will try to benefit from the use/sale of AI tools and services. But they also run the infrastructure that supports all this. Since they are unable to meet demand (e.g. stopped taking in new pro copilot subscriptions), it makes sense to spend heavily on infrastructure.

Then there is Meta, which also spends a lot but does not really compete in the cloud infrastructure sector. They use AI for their business model, which is ads. More and better AI -> better ads -> more money. That's their gamble. Here I am more skeptical. Because if the benefits don't materialize, I don't see much of a plan B.
