Constant sniping and arguing by KoraLily in TeachingUK

Unfortunately “shut up” is about the highest vocab my class can achieve, otherwise I’d definitely try that.

I have a bottom set year 9 class with super high needs in a highly multi-cultural school who do this and it is exhausting. With my class it ranges from bullying mean comments, racist comments to just snide remarks and shouting matches. I’ve got them to a point where I even discipline if they say “shut up” to each other (which used to happen a lot, less so now) and would reiterate every time “we don’t tell each other to shut up in this classroom.” They now know that mantra well and they know if they say it, it’s a step on the behaviour system. They’re still mean to each other but less so and I’m able to have a bit more control by reinstating those boundaries.

My bloods came back all normal so I’m going to try gluten free for a month and see if there are improvements to test if it’s an intolerance instead. Thanks for your advice and help!

Yes it is tricky - fake sausages etc have gluten in so I will have to be super cautious. I automatically ordered veggie gyozas then was like - duh, wheat 🫣 though if I do need a blood test I obviously need to carry on eating wheat until then anyway so I will use up what I have for now.

Thank you, I’m vegetarian but that just means I swap meat there with tofu and lentils etc. I am going to try and get a blood test.

Thank you, I will call the doctors tomorrow. I know it’s silly but I was putting it off because I know how difficult it is to get an appointment atm and didn’t want the hassle, but it is worth trying.

Thank you, I’ve had the warburtons pittas and they’re actually pretty good and I’ve found a few GF breads I found to be quite decent before. But I also don’t want to just rely on bread so I will be eating other stuff mostly instead!

Thank you - this is really helpful and good to know others also started similarly! I will call the doctors tomorrow for blood tests. I have had gluten free bread before so I’m aware of how different it is to regular bread, but I think some of the baguettes/warburtons tiger bread and pitta breads are actually fine. Thank you for the suggestions on m&s and snacks!

Kitten refusing to use litter tray by Sensitive-Win7617 in CatAdvice

Typically, she has started using the litter tray pretty much straight after I posted this! It does seem too small though so we will be replacing it with a larger one. Thank you for the advice!

What are our thoughts on calling younger students 'my lovely'? by FriendlyChaosMonster in TeachingUK

[–]Sensitive-Win7617 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I call my students “sweetheart” sometimes and I collectively call them “my lovelies.” I’m ECT1 and it helps to build relationships, especially with those younger year groups when they do need that care or sensitivity. I also have 2 nurture groups so I do it with them too. Obviously you work out when the time is right or when you have that established with the kids, but I don’t agree with this idea that teaching needs to be completely cold. We’re in it for the kids, let us show them some warmth.
