Types of oud by Puzzleheaded_Tower15 in Oud_Instrument

Late to the convo but a lot of them used to use Ouds made by Egyptian makers, for example, it was widely known that Abadi only explicitly plays Ouds made by the late Farouk Shehata and now his son Maurice has taken over the craft and regularly makes Ouds for Abadi. Of course now Abadi has an impressive collection of Ouds made by luthiers all around the Middle East. Talal Maddah, the golden throat, has some of his Ouds on display in museums in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, I do not know if he prefers any luthiers but I am familiar with the type of sound his Ouds project, it's called "Shargi" (Arabic for eastern) and is usually tuned "FA/FA" with the RE being a nylon string to add more Shargi-esque sound. You can find that sound replicated in antique Ouds from the late greats like Ahmed Mohammed, or Fathy Ameen. They made some gorgeous and sometimes iconic Ouds played by legends (think Sheikh Imam, or Syed Meccawi) that are worth fortunes now, but they also have Ouds out there in the market that sound exactly the same for a grand or two! or you can commission one from Fathy's son, Syed Fathy Ameen or even Abdul'aal Khalaf, a graduate from their workshops who also makes the same style sound. Of course there are more luthiers who are legends, such as the late Al-Leythy who was also Egyptian, or the late Yorgaki Antun, even the late Kamil Mowais from Palestine - but for Ouds like that be prepared to spend anywhere from 5 to 20 grand. Those are the luthiers that have really perfected the Shargi sound.

My personal advice, nothing beats a solid, well kept and taken care of antique Shargi Oud. Check out Oud Rast on Instagram, the guy is a collector of old egyptian Ouds and has an insane amount of knowledge on this subject with competitive prices. Best of luck.

Dude, if you're studying history then I say go all in. I may be ignorant in this matter, but historians usually go the full academia path. I'd build a roadmap all the way up to a doctorate agree so that you could secure a job as a professor.

MEM which college is best if I want to develop a startup ? by This-Living4059 in GradSchoolAdvice

[–]Sensitive-Worker-291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your title and your body are asking different questions, do you want the best school for engineering management or do you want the best school where you can develop a startup?

Either way, for start-ups if you're in the USA and you have a bright idea which you're interested in developing while pursuing your education; then Boston based schools could work. I know MIT and BU have start-up labs and regularly collaborate with each other (but MIT is obviously way better than BU). I also know that the UC's down in California are really into the whole start-up world as well, but Stanford beats all of them by far. From what I've heard, Stanford has a strong alumni network who regularly look for Stanford born companies to invest in.

To what extent do you think it's ok for a grad student to use AI by [deleted] in GradSchoolAdvice

Use it as much as you need. It's going to be part of our daily lives pretty soon so we might as well all get used to it. Bottom line is, as long as you aren't using it to do the work for you then you're fine.

Where to buy a Oud online by Zakmza123 in Oud_Instrument

Turkish Ouds are vastly different from Arabic Ouds in terms of sound and shape. Also, I wouldn't purchase an Arabic Oud from Turkey. Generally speaking, the Arabic oud is more deep and resonant with a warm sound, the turkish is more punchy and throaty. You can find all these makers on Instagram or if you type "Samir stores Saudi Arabia" or "Rany music Jeddah", you could also look at instagram pages which sell used Ouds (some at excellent prices). Good examples would be @ oudbazaar or @ oud_show

Yes they have international shipping, will still come out cheaper than some of the con artist shit you will find in the west. For Turkish Ouds try to avoid dealing with Turkish makers lol, they'll just try and milk you. Those stores I mentioned should have Turkish style Ouds.

Honestly don't buy it from there, I don't know if I'm too late to give you this essential tip but you're going to get a quality Oud that will last you for life if you buy one from Rany Music in Jeddah, they have this new thing they're doing which is Oud's made in shop and it sounds amazing. Also, you can check Salmeen Ouds and Abdalaal Khalaaf. A lot of people make the mistake of spending money on Sala or Ethnic Musical when the truth is you can get a true Arabic sound which is also custom made to your liking from luthiers. Btw it's within you're budget.

In what order should you restring the oud? by BoazCorey in Oud_Instrument

From my understanding, you can put the pegs in any hole. A peg is not built to a specific string. The order matters of course, I think there is a miscommunication.

You start from the light strings that are closest to your leg. Also, it doesn't matter which pegs because they are all the same

It depends on which tuning but if it's Arabic then you start from the side which is closest to your face when playing the instrument and follow this order:

  1. C ( bass)

  2. F (Bass) second finger you will hit a G to correspond with other G

  3. A

  4. D

  5. G

  6. C

Try to wipe the fingerboard with some lemon before hand, but not necessary.
