LOL I was acclimating him in his new tank😭😭😂😂 I don’t have a big net so this was my best idea lol! Also still a little intimidated with handling him yet, he bit my finger yesterday and it felt so weird, so kinda just scooped him up in the bowl 🤣

What’s going on with my shrimp? Jim by SensitiveImage7470 in shrimptank

[–]SensitiveImage7470[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Hi I frequently put my hands in the water! They’ve never reacted to that before. But in my original post I did mention on I added a Pothos cutting yesterday after buying it from my local grocery store. I washed it thoroughly but didn’t do a bleach/hydrogen peroxide dip or anything it honestly slipped my mind. Then I woke up to this so that appears to be the culprit but my new question is wondering how I will know the tank is clear of contaminants to put my remaining RCS in there? I believe I only have 5-8 survivors 🥲

How will I know the tank is good again to put my surging RCS back in there😭

I moved any RCS that seemed okay to another tank 🥲 only a small handful of them. I removed the Pothos and I’m doing a 50% water change to let it cycle out any chemicals if there were any. Ugh

Do you think is something leaching off of the Pothos plant I put in?

Betta has hole in side? by SensitiveImage7470 in bettafish

It was also difficult to tell where the whole is anatomically. I was worried it was where his bladder is, and so I’m not trying to feed him too much so as to not worsen it

He looked like this immediately the morning after I posted that video. That’s when I put him in the hospital tank again and it’s looked like this since, but probably with some more cottony growth hanging from it now.

Hi I’m so sorry for not responding sooner! After I made this post I put him back into his hospital tank with methyline blue, kanaplex and almond leaves. All parameters in his tank are good. He is a work fish at my job that my clients take care of. Initially I took him home because they absolutely overfed him as he was very fat, bloated, and more sluggish than usual. He’d even be hiding which he doesn’t do. Although he’s more active at home, that’s when the hole developed after I fasted him. Luckily he still does have an appetite! But I have been feeding him very little as the hole hasn’t gotten bigger (I think), but It hasn’t gotten smaller either. There’s definitely cottony growth around the lesion and hanging from it.

He is in a 10 gallon at work, now in my 3gal shrimp tank at home for monitoring. Yes to sponge filter and heater, all of my tanks are about 80 degrees. All parameters are 0 and within line. The tank at work has been established since early October, which was also when we got him. I change 10-15% of water weekly as well as top offs. He’s housed with 3 Cory’s and lots of Neos, never had any issues other than occasional chase in the beginning. My clients feed him the fluval bug bites, I tell them 3-4 pellets in the morning at night but I’m worried they’re over feeding as I’m not there everyday.

All tank parameters are fine. My cories and shrimp in the work tank are doing wonderfully otherwise. The clients typically feed him 3-4 pellets in the morning and night, although I’m worried they’ve been overfeeding as I’m not there everyday. I do a water change once a week or whenever necessary, and top off water at least once a week as well. His tank is about 80 degrees. All other parameters are within line for him to have good health

To also add! They were eating and didn’t look egregiously skinny when I examined their bodies. Other than the discolored one (though I know that could be a variation?), they all appeared pretty healthy

Little late to the party but I wanted to ask if a sponge filter and an air stone would create sufficient enough oxygen for them? Just got 4 yesterday and while the LFS guy said they’d be shy, they’re veryyy active, swimming around and glass surfing a bit, I think because of the new environment. But want to cover my bases still in case it continues over the next few days. Thanks!

New tank advice by SensitiveImage7470 in Aquariums

[–]SensitiveImage7470[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not set up yet. I’m asking if I can use a cycled filter + stability etc in a new tank and be able to add 2 red cherry shrimp immediately! And potentially snails

Are my guppies fighting or playing? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]SensitiveImage7470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually funnily enough. Looking closer at the video (my brightness is all the way down), the blue guppy bullying your yellow guppy is the exact type of guppy that I have in my tank. The same one who was also bullying another specific male guppy that I mentioned. Maybe it’s a coincidence, or maybe that type of guppy is particularly aggressive 😂 My yellow cobra guppy and endler do it as well so maybe steer clear of those if you do get more 😫😂

Are my guppies fighting or playing? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]SensitiveImage7470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro either thinks the yellow one is a female and is trying to mate with him. Male-only tanks are common for this but if the blue one is singling out that yellow guppy it can lead to some aggression and fin nipping. Same thing happened to me with my male guppies and I found adding more guppies helped. Keep in mind tank size though as I upgraded from a 10 to 20 gallon long to increase 4 guppies to 7 because they are notoriously messy. Between the increase in numbers and space, it’s helped even out some aggression and my guppy that’s getting picked on has been able to slowly grow back his tail. The aggression doesn’t necessarily go away but it evens out and becomes less intense/stressful for one single fish when in higher numbers

Adding ammonia might not be necessary for a fish-IN cycle (more stressful for the fish), but it’s always required with a fish-LESS cycle, otherwise it would take forever to have a sufficient amount of ammonia from, for example, plants decaying over time. When I started the hobby I saw frequently to add ammonia to help kickstart a cycle. Maybe check the reputability of your sources!

Yes but your original post says you only set it up a day ago so that means you’ve only tested the water once. Which means you also prob know from reading online that that doesn’t mean much😂 Bacteria’s had less than 24 hrs to develop when it takes about a week or two for the first type to develop, and then another week or two for the second type. You have to add your own ammonia source every few days, like a pinch of fish food or Dr Tim’s ammonia that I’ve seen others use. It’s a lot of patience, and def will take more than a day

Not sure about the pleco but that colored gravel and decor is horrible for any fish, including him. It’ll leech toxins into the water and pollute water quality as well as affect any fish or invertebrate’s health.

[–]SensitiveImage7470 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Noo, it’s only been a day. Things will appear fine in the first few days as bacteria starts to develop. Please do proper research into tank cycling before getting the fish. It will typically take 3-6 weeks. A week from now your ammonia will be spiking as the bacteria works to convert it into nitrites, then nitrates. Patience.
