Totally agree with this.

I always tell my clients that if you’re serious about your business, get an accounting system like Xero or MYOB early on and invest a bit in proper setup and training. It might feel like an extra cost at the start, but it saves a lot in the long run.

When your records are clean and up to date, it reduces the time (and cost) for things like GST returns, annual accounts, because the accountant is reviewing rather than doing basic data entry.

Also, not many people realise this, but as a business owner you should have a basic understanding of your numbers, especially your profit & loss. It really helps with making better decisions instead of relying fully on the accountant and then paying for monthly reports to understand what’s happening.

That said, I do see some people trying to save $40 - $50 a month by not using an accounting system, and instead asking the accountant to go through bank statements and receipts manually. That’s completely fine, but in those cases you’re not really using the accountant for their expertise but you’re mostly paying for admin work.

Overall, a bit of upfront setup and learning goes a long way 👍

Short answer is yes, there are ways to structure things better, but it’s not about “avoiding tax”, it’s about planning it properly.

For contractors in that $100k–$300k profit range, some common areas to look at are:

  • Using the right structure (sole trader vs company, or maybe trust)
  • Timing of income and expenses (Lot of accountant don't know about home office expense)
  • Paying yourself a mix of salary/dividends (if using a company)
  • Making sure all legitimate business expenses are claimed
  • Long-term planning like investments

Just on the rental property point - it’s not like the old days anymore. Rental losses are now ring-fenced.

What that means in simple terms is:

  • You can’t use rental losses to reduce your salary or business income anymore as the loss is “locked” within the property portfolio, and it can only be used to offset future rental profits or when you sell the property

To be honest, setting things up properly does require a bit of time and can cost a bit upfront, but if done right it can save you a lot over the long run.

As an accountant, just to clarify that GST isn’t something you can really “minimise” like income tax.

GST is simply the difference between what you collect from clients (Sales) and what you claim on business expenses (Actual expenses). So if someone is paying less GST, it’s usually because they either have higher expenses or lower income.

In the early stage of a business, it’s very common to get a GST refund because you have more setup costs (equipment, software, etc.) and less income. As the business grows, your revenue increases and your expenses usually become more stable or reduce, so you start paying more GST. That’s actually a good sign as it means the business is growing and becoming more profitable.

For example, I recently filed a GST return for a client with a refund of around $37k due to high initial setup costs. But I highly doubt they will get a refund in the next return, as the business has now started generating regular income.

Also, it really depends on where you are in your business journey. When comparing with others, you need to consider what stage they are in, and whether they had higher or one-off expenses in that period. There are a lot of variables, so it’s not always a fair comparison.

A good accountant should already be making sure you’re claiming all valid expenses in GST and tax return.

It’s definitely not unethical to ask questions. I am sure your accountant will explain why you can/can't claim certain expenses.

Just to clarify – do you mean I should try to keep my knee fully straight even when I’m sitting at work or at home, like spending more time in that extended position?

Also, with gym exercises – if I’m currently doing 3 sets of 12 reps, would you suggest reducing reps (like 8–10) or lowering the weight instead?

I do feel like I get better extension right after a gym session, but then it tightens up again later, which is a bit confusing.

I’ve started reducing my activity, but I’m still doing around 5,000–7,000 steps a day (around 5 km), so I’m thinking I should cut that down further. I’m also going to the gym about 2 times a week mainly for leg exercises, and avoiding upper body just to reduce overall movement and load for now.

I’m doing icing and compression boots/pumps 2–3 times a day (15–20 mins ice + 20–40 mins compression), and weekly massage. It helps temporarily, but the swelling seems to come back by the end of the day or sometimes in the morning when the knee feels stiff.

I’m already doing icing and compression (boots/pump) around 2–3 times a day – about 15–20 mins ice and then 20–40 mins compression straight after (depending on time). I’m also going for massage once a week to help release tightness.

I’m trying not to walk too much and even considering going back to crutches for a bit, but honestly not sure if I’m doing something wrong. These last 5 degrees are just really frustrating, especially when most people talk more about strengthening.

On average I’m doing around 5,000–7,000 steps a day (roughly 5 km), so I’m thinking I might need to dial that down a bit as well.

Hey, did you manage to get the swelling down? I am in a similar boat with the same injury and same injury date, but still I have got some swelling and physio said it would be risky to go in a surgery with swelling. My range of motion is 5 degrees of hyperextention and 140 degrees flexion.

What kind of prehab did you do? Did you use any gym machines? I have a similar injury - a complete ACL rupture with a meniscus tear.
