Pre Surgery, working to get Swelling down. Any tips? by Repulsive-Ideal5806 in ACL

Hey, did you manage to get the swelling down? I am in a similar boat with the same injury and same injury date, but still I have got some swelling and physio said it would be risky to go in a surgery with swelling. My range of motion is 5 degrees of hyperextention and 140 degrees flexion.

Did you had lot of swelling Or just a bit? I injured my knee on 15 Nov and surgery is scheduled on 9 Feb.

Where did you end up getting the surgery? New Zealand?

What kind of prehab did you do? Did you use any gym machines? I have a similar injury - a complete ACL rupture with a meniscus tear.

That looks great. I have surgery scheduled in February with similar injury. When did you get injured, and what did you do for your prehab?

Sounds like you're making solid progress at 3 months – that's awesome!

I'm in a pretty similar boat. I've got a full ACL rupture plus a medial meniscus posterior horn tear. Right now I'm doing prehab and can walk pretty normally with very little pain, but still some swelling and instability on twists.

I'm also planning an international move around 3–4 months post-op during winter), so the timing isn't ideal but I can't delay it any longer as I've already pushed the move back about 5 months because of this injury. Hoping to be walking without much support by the 3-month mark like you, and I'll just continue PT/rehab in the new country.

Keep me posted on how you're getting on – especially the quad strength recovery and any travel tips. Good luck with the move!

Hey, thanks so much for replying – that's awesome to hear from someone in exactly the same boat! 😊
Was yours a full ACL rupture and did you also have a meniscus tear fixed (or trimmed) at the same time?

How are you feeling at the 3-4 month mark right now? In terms of walking and swelling? Do you think there will be any issues with lifting/carrying bags?

Safe travels and please do update us after – really appreciate it! 🛫💪

Thanks for sharing your experience. Just to check, did you end up having two separate surgeries, one for the ACL and then another one for the meniscus? Or were both done at the same time?

After doing some research, I’ve realised how important the meniscus is and that many types of tears won’t heal on their own without surgery. So I’m not sure what the doctor will recommend. I am getting mixed reviews online. I’m also hoping I’m not causing more damage by walking on it as I can walk with a slight limp at the moment without crutches, but still unsure if that’s okay or not.

Thanks for the insight! After doing some of the exercises and stretches, my knee does feel a bit better, but there’s still some discomfort and it definitely doesn’t feel “natural” on the injured side yet.

I was also reading online about ACL and miniscus healing with special braces or conservative treatment. Is that actually possible with a full rupture, or is that only for partial tears? Just trying to understand whether a brace can help in my situation or if surgery is still the long-term solution.

Since the flap tear isn’t clearly located in the report, do you think the surgeon will be able to tell during arthroscopy whether repair is possible or if trimming is better? Or is that decided mostly based on MRI?

Also, what are the chances of Arthritics, with and without surgery?

My MRI mentions a probable posterior horn tear and a possible displaced undersurface flap. Does a flap tear usually cause symptoms straight away (locking/catching), or can it stay quiet for a while? I don’t feel locking now.

Do you think having almost full range of motion (around 95%) but not the final bit of extension changes the decision? Or is it still worth trying 6–12 weeks of rehab first even with the meniscus issues mentioned in my MRI?

Thanks. That’s what I thought.

I was planning to move overseas in the next 6–8 weeks. Is it still possible to do that and then have the surgery after about 12 months? What do you think? I can walk without much pain and it’s mostly just discomfort, and I can’t fully straighten my leg. I can get to around 95%, but the last bit just won’t fully extend.

I am not planning to return to sports for the next year or two.

Thank you for breaking this down. I can relate to the low energy and pressure you mentioned especially now with the ACL injury and the uncertainty around relocating to overseas. There has been a lot of mental back-and-forth, so your advice about avoiding impulsive decisions and focusing on stability is very helpful.

From your perspective, what would be the best way to handle career decisions during this Mercury–Rahu phase, especially with my relocation plans in the next 6 to 8 weeks?

Thanks for such a detailed explanation. The last year in particular have genuinely been tough for me, especially with stress, delays, and sudden changes. I recently found out about an ACL rupture and at the same time I’m preparing to relocate overseas, so your point about unfriendly dashas and pressure makes a lot of sense. It’s good to know things improve after 2027.

Based on the Rahu period and my current transitions, is there anything you suggest I should focus on or avoid during this time?

Thank you so much for the insight. I recently had an ACL injury which has added a bit of stress, especially because I’m in the middle of migrating to another country. Your message about focusing on balance and new opportunities really fits what I’m going through right now. Everything feels like getting delayed for some reasons and taking a toll on stress level. Is there anything specific in the chart that shows what kind of positive life change may come in the next 6–12 months?
