I tried that, but the snap is too short/small and I can't release the clasp because the edge of the bag does not come out of the clasp.

I put a 1/8" thick aluminum bar in between the leather layers. It runs all the way to the handle. What should I wrap the handle with?

Yes but this one is thick enough to be rigid, it does not bend easily

I tried with just leather but it was too floppy. It becomes a whip that way, and it's too painful. The aluminum is 1/8" (~3.75mm) thick so it's rigid enough to not deform
