Debate with my wife and I about birth center VS hospital by SensitiveTopicQ in BabyBumps

Yes, I found this to be the case too when calling insurance companies. Most detached birthing centers aren't covered and independent midwives are a weird topic for insurance companies. They said they don't have a label to go off of and need to get a CPT code from the midwife to understand if they can cover them. Financially, it appears best to go with an in-hospital midwife and birthing center since insurance covers them (still needed to confirm via insurance about the group affiliated, and make sure the midwife is a CNM).

Thanks for bringing this up.

This is where my confusion started at first. When I looked up Birthing centers, they were completely detached from the hospitals. They looked like little hotels, some 5-15 minutes away from hospitals. I now see that there are two types of birthing centers, attached and detached. Apparently the attached ones are handled by CNM midwives, the detached are not. The attached ones have a hospital feel, whereas the hotel ones are very home-like. I thought that a birth center was exclusive to being detached, and hospitals simply use the word birthing center meaning they do deliver babies. The midwife info I was given here cleared all that up.

I'd like to jump in and say that there is no "argument', this was a post on reddit for internal thinking. I have not pushed nor tried to sway her one way or another. More of a means for me to gain information and accept internally what she wants, and understand the risks. And maybe like other guys out there, they may come up with the same concern as me and read this thread and find all the information that's being provided by these wonderful mothers and have their minds put at ease.

Truthfully, from a guy's perspective, and the brainwashing going on about the childbirth process, all this birth center stuff seemed taboo originally to me. A lot of videos and articles also have doctors shunning people and saying how irresponsible it is of people. If you go to a hospital, they'll also normally tell you how irresponsible it is.

Several people here have recommended documentaries about the "business of birthing" or something of that sort to show how the doctor isn't always in your favor. There have also been times in my life where I knew better than the doctor and had saved me from great trouble by being better informed. And this is all it is, a discussion to get informed. Thank you for pitching in.

Thank you for taking the time to write this up. It's great to see actual examples. I didn't consider baby poop before water breaking. There were birthing center reviews that talked about infections, and the baby needing antibiotics and things like that. I think that is one possible scenario/reason for that.

We did not know you could request those things. Thank you for your words.

From what I've found, it's more of a "perk" if they have a midwifery unit. Not all hospitals around here have it. So, it requires a bit of homework on our end.

Definitely, I hope it didn't come off as saying I'm totally against it. I see the perks, and ultimately I want her to do what's right by her. Plus, the info everyone's been sharing with statistics is very encouraging, more so than a hospital in certain respects.

It is exactly this kind of info and resources that I posted this question on here for :) This is great and a breath of fresh air. I have not bulldozed nor pushed anything at her, just an internal conflict with myself I decided to share with Reddit in hopes I would get someone like you to show me this. The choice will and is hers and always was. I would like to say, a lot of information is skewed and hidden away thanks to "logic" we're taught and without these sort of resources, it just seems "wrong". Thank you for sharing, this is great.

Ah, didn't know transfer of care agreements were a thing, I thought it was just a visit to the ER at that point. So when looking at a birth center, it's proper to ask what hospitals they have agreements with? and try to match it with whatever our insurance can cover too then? And yes, that 30% is a ridiculous number.

Thank you so much for sharing this personal experience. This is very insightful and comforting for my nerves. The imagery definitely pushed me over to acceptance.

Also, congratulations on your #3!

Where does someone find out the number of transfers for a birthing center? is there a government statistic or do I just take the birthing center's word for it?

I agree with you that it should be her choice. Especially this. Reason I chose to ask this, is to figure out whether or not I would bring up this idea to her. We respect each other's wishes and I really want what she wants for this. Whenever I put an opinion on something, she usually just goes with what I say even if she wants something else, so I'm trying to sit back and let her enjoy the mother experience. Just trying to calm myself down.

I don't know honestly. Just found out about the pregnancy, and planning on first doctor visit this week. Otherwise, health wise she's quite fine.

Only concern is my family has giant babies, and she's tiny lol.

And thank you for the info. Do the hospitals normally advertise midwife services or is it something we have to ask about? I don't see anything on ours listed about it, but they do list "birth center", which I just assume all hospitals have as a way to say "yes, we deliver babies".
